So I originally bought the spreader at my local LOWE'S which sells it for $49.99 and had a special for buy the spreader and get one 12 lb bag of fertilizer for free. Its real easy to snap the bag on and go but I got a defective one that broke about halfway through. If it is making a click-clack sound, yours may be defective. It spreads great but this is my first time ever fertilizing/weeding a yard. It seems to spread it around 2 to 2.5 feet wide and shoots about 3 feet in front. Most of the fertilizer will be used except for perhaps less than a handful of the fertilizer that won't make it out of the bag without great effort but most of it is out. I do notice that when the bag is completely full, it seems to spread much more of the fertilizer than towards the end. It is mostly made of plastic parts which makes me very worried about its durability. One thing I would recommend, when the bag is full, don't try to push it unless you are actively spreading the fertilizer (pick it up and move it to the spot and then use it), I notice that the spreader starts feeling like it is under a great amount of strain and may break. This is just my opinion. I am giving it only 3 stars because although it does a good job at spreading, it doesn't seem very durable to me.

We appreciate your feedback about the spreader, and are saddened to hear that you had received a defective one. We want you to feel confident in our products, and for that reason we offer a product guarantee to our customers. If you own any Scotts spreader that is either defective or broken for any reason, we encourage you to give us a call using the number that can be found either on our website or on the back of the bag for any Scotts lawn product, and we would be more than happy to assist you with either repairing or replacing the spreader.

Very easy to use and the Edge Guard makes it very simple to get along sidewalks, curbs and driveways. It helps save product and only place it where its needed. I like the fact that the handle folds down and will fit in my storage box in the back yard. I like the idea of the Snap Pac system although I think that if one reads labels, you could easily add another product to an empty Snap Pac container and get the same results for less money. I really depends on the size of your yard and doing the math based on how much product is needed.

Pros: It's a great system and spreads product evenly and is easy to use.

Cons: Value, but that's an individual's judgement call.

I bought mine at Orchard supply locally on sale for 29.99, on a weekend with no sales tax, and had a coupon for 10 dollars off when spending 30, so at 20 dollars couldn't complain. Used the weed and feed bag, and it went on as advertised. Then when I went to spread seed, bought a non snap pac bag, cut the top off the weed and feed bag, and worked just as well pouring the product into the cut snap pac bag. Well worth it!

Ever heard of King Gillette? Yeah, he's the razor blade guy. Buy some razor blades, and we'll throw in the handle for free!

What he didn't tell you was that the razor blades were going to be FAR more expensive from now on. Once you're hooked on the handle, you're going to need to buy the razors, and razors are EXPENSIVE.

This is the same general concept with the snap on broadcast spreader. I got mine for free as long as I bought two bags of Scott's Southern Weed and Feed. Great deal, until I found out that the snap-on bags are a financially bad decision. You'll spend more money on the weed and feed because it comes in the snap-on bags. Case in point, 8000 square feet of Southern Weed and Feed in the snap-on bags costs more than 10000 square feet of Southern Weed and Feed in the non-snap-on bags.

Bite the bullet and get a real broadcast spreader. You'll save money in the long run.

In the meantime, I've rigged my snap-on spreader so it'll work without having to buy the expensive bags. I simply left a bag on it, and wrapped some duct tape around the bag and the handles to keep the bag upright. Now I just pour new weed-and-feed into the old bags, and save tons of money.

We apologize that your are not satisfied with the design of your Scotts Snap spreader. The Snap spreader has been designed with idea of allowing it to be easy and safe to use, while removing some of the hassles involved with the application of products using a typical spreader.

There are no spreader settings required when using the Scotts Snap spreaders. In fact each Snap-Pac is adjusted for the appropriate application rate. Because the spreader setting is dictated by each individual Snap-Pac, it is important that empty Snap-Pacs not be refilled. Scott Snap-Pacs will not always contain the exact formulations that are used in similar bag type fertilizers. By refilling the Snap-Pac there is no assurance that the appropriate rate is being used; which in turn greatly increases the risk of damage from over application, or reduced efficacy from under application.

Will keep bag in place and refill with other brands. Purchase cheaper brands but reuse the bag for other products.

Used it today to overseed our lawn, it was great! This thing is so easy! We have probably about 12,000 sq ft of lawn/moss/dandelions, based on the amounts of product we used. Our lawn is kinda graded, not level, with tree roots, and poorly maintained (by us).

It was dead simple to load the snap bags on the spreader and push it around. Super easy to pick up the snap bags and pour leftovers back into the stock bags at the end. Edge guard worked great, spreads product evenly even with edge guard on.

3 tips / things we learned:

-- When reusing bags with non-snap-pac product, keep the bag handles intact. Just make a slit in the top of the bag, cutting only through the front plastic. The bag handles must be able to loop onto the spreader to keep the bag upright so that the contents don't spill. We have one spot that should grow a grass monster now...

-- To load more product into an opened snap pac, take the bag off the spreader and set it on the ground to load because the bag stays upright by itself. The spreader does NOT have a kickstand or some method to stay upright by itself... Second grass monster seeded...

-- In the rain, we plan to try covering the slit in the snap pac with Saran Wrap and scotch tape to improvise a rain cover. Should be even greatert!

Sad that I missed the ridiculous Amazon sale last week, but will totally buy another if it goes on sale again so we can wrap up yard work twice as fast. Glad we got this!

* Disclaimer: we've never used another kind of spreader and we're first time homeowner so we have no actual basis for comparison.
