The very definition of a Cult Classic, Screaming Skull is a love it/hate it proposition. I love the movie and this Blu ray is an absolute treat. Great print quality, formatted well into 16:9, a 12 minute making of doc, a photo gallery AND to top it all off getting the business from the MST3K boys.
What more do you want? This movie was shot by Floyd Crosby, an Academy Award winner, he also shot High Noon, and it is lit and shot beautifully, some of the interior scenes are just stunning. It was shot in a real, spooky old house and it has a genuine, Gothic atmosphere.
You can watch it for free on YT if you have never seen it. If you are a fan already, buy it and enjoy.

Corny as it is, I sincerely love this movie. The two leads (particularly Ms. Webber) give very good performances, the score is classic '50s B-movie, and there are moments of real atmosphere. Granted, those moments are punctuated by undeniably hilarious shots of the titular menace wiggling in the grass or rolling from place to place, and Alex Nicol's odd performance as Mickey the caretaker will have "Manos" fans wondering if he and Torgo are related.

The picture quality of this Blu-ray restoration is outstanding. Grain looks natural throughout, print damage is minimal, contrast is meticulously calibrated. Whoever decided this goofy little gem is worth such treatment: thank you. I'd hoped it would get it one day, but had not expected it to.

Yes. I could not come up with a better title for this review. A skull that seems to chase people around. That's what the writer, producer, director, and investors were banking on to make a winning release.

Now, the intro is a '50s classic. The coffin with the note in it, with the narrator warning the audience about how terrifying this movie is, so they thought it only fair to pay for the funeral expenses for anyone that died of fright while watching the film. That was a keeper! Unfortunately, the part after that scene was this movie.

Who can really be terrified by a skull? Just a skull. Oh, it may roll around at times. Pop up here and there. Barge in when it's not welcome. But that's about the extent of its chilling powers. And that alone is the downfall of the movie.

Had they come up with a better embodiment of haunting, I'm sure this movie would have been quite good, and I'd be reviewing my purchase of the Blu-ray.

Besides that, the cast, dialog, and acting ranged from quite good to acceptable.

I saw The Screaming Skull on daytime TV as a child back in the 1970s and its gothic imagery has haunted me ever since. Watching it again decades later, it turns out my memories of the movie are far more richly filmic and interesting. The first half of The Screaming Skull mainly consists of talking heads over-explaining a very simple premise. It takes enormous pains to set up a vaguely Hitchcockian scenario involving a newly remarried husband who attempts to scare his new rich wife to death. While some of the ideas are rich and full of potential, the film takes a tediously stock-standard path and is consequently dreary and uninteresting at times as a result. The long takes during the early talking head sequences (with its rather wooden co-stars) especially makes the film drag.

Having said all this, the film does have many merits and achieves a curious gothic sensibility during its most interesting sequences and is vaguely reminiscent of Jacques Tournier's I Walked With A Zombie (1943). The whole film pretty much takes place in the empty mansion and its surrounding estate, giving it a trapped, claustrophobic feel. It uses sound to create ambiguity - simultaneously suggesting both natural and supernatural causes for the happenings in the house. The empty Californian mansion (there is almost no furniture at all) provides a very spooky and foreboding space and the filmmakers use it effectively. The garden, which is far more welcoming than the house nevertheless also has an ethereal, haunting, liminal quality that is well used during the hysteria of the climax when, what was only imagined, becomes fully real. Whether it is deliberate or not, the film clearly observes the polarities of inside/outside, interior/exterior, house/garden, civilisation/nature, male/female, villain/victim, natural/supernatural, day/night, which gives it an additional layer of intrigue and interest.

I fully support those other reviewers who have added complaints about the poor quality transfer of this film. It really is appalling and, at times, it's washed out and barely watchable. Don't be in any hurry to purchase this wretchedly poor version.

The only reason I acquired this film was because I was curious to know who the actor Russ Conway was. To me there is only one Russ Conway and that was Billy Cotton's discovery, the rictus grin, nine and a half fingered pianist of the 1950s and 1960s credited with major hits like Side Saddle. Having now seen it I'm none the wiser since there were no credits at the end to say who played whom.

Even for the standards of the late 1950s this film was utterly hopeless. The irony is it promoted itself in theatres at the time as so terrifying that the makers would pay the funeral costs of anyone who died of fright watching it! They're more likely to have died laughing. The visual and audio quality was so poor and I could barely follow the dialogue for what it was worth. A real turkey.
