Product Description

Get ready for such a fright when the Screaming Skull arises!

When widower Eric (John Hudson) bring his mentally fragile new bride Jenni home to the palatial estate of his first wife, strange things begin to happen. Jenni is certain she is being tormented by Eric’s former wife who died under mysterious circumstances. But no one else seems to hear the ominous screams or see the rolling skull that comes knocking at the front door. Much like master showman William Castle, the producers of the film promised a free burial service for anyone who died while watching the film. Of course, this never happened. Or did it?

More of a mystery thriller than a true horror film, but still tons of drive-in nostalgia fun.

More of a mystery thriller than a true horror film, but still tons of drive-in nostalgia fun.
BOTTOM LINE: This film has likely never looked better, and probably never will. If you are a fan of the film then snap this beautiful Blu-ray up without hesitation. If you're unsure then I still say buy it. SCREAMING SKULL is loaded with old school menace and chills. It has charm and lots of atmosphere, but younger/A.D.D. viewers who insist on action, boobs, gore or explosions are warned to stay away. 4 STARS (3 for the movie, plus another star for the gorgeous hi-def presentation!)THOUGHTS: Similar in feel to REBECCA and GASLIGHT, this movie got unfairly lumped in with the more traditional drive-in schlock of the period due in no small part to the William Castle-esque marketing gimmick that guaranteed you would be buried free of charge if you died of fright while seeing the film. The actors are pretty good considering the low budget and breakneck filming schedule. First time director Alex Nicol (who also plays the mentally disturbed, child-like groundskeeper, Mickey) turns in a serviceable effort. The sparse unsettling setting of the unfurnished house aids the haunted look & feel of the piece tremendously. Film attendance was also no doubt bolstered by lonely young guys who filled drive-ins and theater seats to gawk at curvy costar Peggy Webber traipsing around in a wispy negligee made practically see-through thanks to some skillfully arranged backlighting - pretty sexy stuff for the time! The movie is nothing you probably haven't seen before but it's still a lot of old school fun and perfectly safe for all but the youngest, most easily frightened family members.THE BLU-RAY: Shout!Factory's Scream division give us a particularly nice-looking transfer for the Blu-ray debut of SCREAMING SKULL. The film has been stuck in Public Domain hell for decades and most only know of the film through viewings of jittery, washed out, faded, garbled-sounding crap copies of a copy of a copy of a tattered 16mm print. This hi-def presentation will give fans & first timers alike a chance to enjoy the film as it was meant to be seen; perhaps the best it's looked since it last played the drive-ins back in the late 1950's. The picture looks clean & clear, minimal scratches/debris, with plenty of good old film grain evident. Sound, too, is clear and evenly balanced. In addition to a solid, professionally supervised 1080p transfer, there are a number of bonus goodies to up the ante. All-in-all, a first rate effort from Shout. Recommended.
