Scythe SCKTT-1000 Kotetsu Glide Stream 120 PWM 400 RPM CPU Cooling
Top customer reviews
The only drawback I had when installing is on socket 1151 boards there are 4 washers that have to go between the sleds and the standoffs, they are a pain while your adding the sled with the screws, but they are necessary for installation as force on the Sky/Kaby lake chips needs to be minimal so the cpu doesn't warp. It is only on the 1151 boards, if have any other socket they are not required.
I did a lot of research on air coolers as I had a aio leak once and do not ever want to go that route again. There is not a whole lot out there on these coolers from Scythe and all I can contribute that to is marketing and cost. You do get what you pay for, and skimping on a cpu cooler or power supply isnt where a builder should pinch pennies.
I have used the Cooler Master, Be Quiets, Noctuas, AIOs, and other various coolers, these coolers for the cost are the best I have used. You just need patience when installing it but it is well worth it.
If you buy this and have a 1151 board, be sure to read the manual or you will be buying a new chip.
My scratch-built case can go from room-cleaning (yes, literally) levels of airflow to completely silent with all of the case fans off, and the Intel stock cooler was too loud for me when the rest of the fans were off. My power supply makes basically no noise, there are no hard disks, and I switched my graphics card cooler for a fanless one, so when I say this is silent, it's not merely quieter than anything else: it's silent.
The Kotetsu is completely inaudible when at 25% pwm (460 rpm, at least my copy). I can only barely hear it with my ear pressed to the case, and as long as I'm not touching it, it might as well not make any noise at all.
When the case fans are off, circulation is slightly restricted, but it still limits my 84-watt processor to a temperature rise of roughly 45 C above ambient even when running Prime95 for hours, with the Kotetsu fan at 500 RPM. With the case fans on, it's barely 30 C above ambient.
All in all, it's an amazing value for a silent, effective CPU cooler.
I was thinking about buying a liquid cooling solution, or a huge NoFan fanless CPU cooler which would have blocked the first PCIe slot and other parts of the motherboard. I finally went with the Scythe which was less than half the price of the other products and it really does the job really well.
Thank you Scythe, you have a new fan.
After installation it is a glorious sight. CPU is nice and cool.
