These two times caused the tape around the keel area to tear. I was absolutely shocked. For the amount of money this kayak cost I expect better. I am a 50+ female so you can imagine my panic in wondering how safe this is going to be. I contacted Sea Eagle via phone when I got home. No one there, I left a message. Next day, no return call so I call. I speak with Carolyn and explain the problem. She looked up my order, confirmed it was a very recent purchase, asked me to send photos and they would get back to me. Seems reasonable, right?
I took the photos, send two emails-one with the problem, the other with my original order form and the attached photos. (see photos I sent that I am posting here.) I called right after the 2 sent emails to confirm Sea Eagle received them. Carolyn answered and said they got both. All day not a word or an email from Sea Eagle.
I had also ordered the footrest/tubing they recommended on their site for my ft385. It came with my order but the clips had been backordered. Not a biggie but during my phone conversation with Carolyn I stated this foot rest wouldn't work on a correct solo position as there would be no place to clip it on.
The next morning I have two emails, one saying the clips have been shipped.??? The other from Carolyn that she didn't get my photos. Is Sea Eagle a reputable company? I'm really getting frustrated. My second email, again with the photos also included a simple request, "tell me how to repair the tear and I'll fix it and buy whatever kind of tape they recommend." Not a peep out of them.
So here is what I can attest to after my two , three hour kayak trips; it was fairly easy to pump up with the foot pump supplied, definitely tracks straight if you use the included skeg and isn't tippy.
Sturdy, customer service and warranty: would not recommend. I have no faith in the company or product after just two trips out on calm water. The warranty is 3 years per the site info but this will be a big IF , if Sea Eagle honors it.
July 16 company needed additional information so their tech guys could assess my tear. ?????? So explained the tear for the third time and advised that weight with me, a paddle, lunch and pump hadn't exceeded the 625 weight limit. All this to advise me how to fix a tear or send me the tape. Will keep you posted.
I did end up buying it direct from Sea Eagle because of their 180 day return policy, but we won't be using that! Can't wait to backpack with it up to some mountain lakes in Washington. Love how light it is for a good sized kayak!
the Sea Eagle Fast Track 385 is a fantastic boat for flatwater and calm rivers. It is a high quality kayak that feels nothing like a pool toy. It has proved more than adequate for multi-day adventures, quick side trips in Lake Powell, and mellow river running. Despite a fit and finish that left us wanting, the overall performance of these kayaks overshadowed all construction shortcomings. We have no worries about the strength and longevity of these boats.
When pushed past their Class II rating, the Fast Tracks quickly became overwhelmed. If you are looking for a whitewater boat, the Sea Eagle Explorer should be far better suited for those conditions.
When viewing the informative videos on Sea Eagle's website, the boat almost sounds too good to be true. The videos almost sound like an infomercial. I can assure you that these boats are NOT infomercial material. These are the finest flatwater IK I have ever experienced. They handled 45 miles on the Green River through Moab for 3 days without a hiccup. Ihave no doubt they would handle 30+ days on the river.
The technology in these boats really sets them apart from other IKs. The needlenose keel, drop stitch floor, and the durable fabric combine to create a sturdy, stable, and fast boat. I don't know of another IK that can compare in flat and calm water. When you factor in Sea Eagle's 180 day risk-free satisfaction policy, and it really becomes a no-brainer.
The fact that 3 of our 4 reviewers sold their personal boats to purchase Sea Eagles should say something about how we feel about them. The Fast Tracks have spoiled me and they will be the new benchmark for my standard of Inflatable Kayaks.
As far as I can tell this is the same practice ('welded seams') the company uses for their other products, once those split and they will, you are left with a pile of unrecyclable plastic junk.
Ours is the second one I've heard of with this split seam issue. Unbelievable the company has no way to repair it and their answer is to send this 40 lbs of expensive pvc to the landfill if a seam splits!
It was a slow, but well tracking boat the few times we used it, comfortable design, it's too bad Sea Eagle can't make a durable product.
