So in the end, yes these Seagate SSD's are fast and do seem to work just fine. They just have a somewhat minor issue with the BIOS on some systems in how they interact with the system BIOS SMART querying. I know I have read on some systems the SMART error even stops the boot process forcing the user to press a key to continue booting which would be very annoying. One would think one of the absolute kings of storage would at least issue a firmware update that corrects that.
This is rugged, at least more than a hard drive. I dropped it from a height of 1 metre (3 feet) a few times and threw it on the floor a few times from the same height to show my colleagues the difference between SSDs and HDDs. No issues whatsoever when I accessed data. A hard drive would have sputtered.
My old hard drive gave me speeds of close to 40 MB/s on benchmarks. This gave me 300 MB/s - I'm using USB3. When I transferred 120 GB of files over, the Seagate SSD gave me an average speed of 250 MB/s and a top speed of 275 MB/s (I transferred from SSD to SSD, not from a HDD to SSD!). Even small files transferred at 10 MB/s, much better than the KB/s that I saw from HDDs.
*A note when seeing real-world values -- The final number is always limited by the weakest hardware. If you have a HDD, the max speed will be the HDD speed. If you use USB 3 like I did, you get close to 300 MB/s. Your SSD isn't spoilt if it transfers at 100 MB/s - check your configuration first!
It's faster than my old external hard drive, lighter, smaller, stronger - good enough for me.
While there is more to how fast and responsive a computer is than the hard drive, I can tell you from writing software that I/O is always the weakest link where latency is concerned. When it comes to loading a large IDE the load times between my old system (an Alienware without SSD) and my new system with SSD, I see more than a minute of difference (and it used to take about a minute). Flashbuilder (the worst of the worst when it comes to loading IMO) loads up and is ready for work in approximately ten seconds when that was a 1.5 minute proposition before. I certainly do not have time to start my machine and go get a cup of coffee while I wait for and OS to boot any more. I turn it on and it's there. Beautiful.
I put this drive in a desktop tower computer I built. If you're building a computer, many modern cases have cut outs to accept 2.5 inch drives. However, you can also buy converts here on Amazon to allow a 2.5 inch drive to go into your 3.5 inch slot. If you have a laptop, you're probably good to go already.
If you are working if SSD is really going to make a big difference, get one of these drives and start giggling.
EDIT......
Ever since installing this my laptop (HP4530s) will randomly grind to a halt. It really doesn't matter what I am working on at the time, the wait mouse icon will appear and every program quits responding. I have re-installed my entire Win7 Pro OS in a failed attempt to stop the behavior and updated all the drivers that HP has available, but the behavior will not stop. Often when I reboot the laptop after such an event it can't find the OS until I enter HP's system check menu and hitting F2 finds the drive. Then it will reboot. Now today it is unusable after several reboots.
This could have been a stellar purchase, but it is completely unreliable. I never know when it is going to lock up my system.
