This is a pretty nice but EXPENSIVE adaptor, it could be cheaper but to works...I got 383MB Read and 223MB write on my Crucial m4 256GB 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s CT256M4SSD2I was able to boot Window 8 on my Apple MacBook Pro MD104LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop (NEWEST VERSION) via Thunderbolt very very fast.....Its not limited to Windows 8, I tried Windows 7 and that worked to....It came up as Standard SATA Port in the Device Manager.... I'll post come pictures.....I recommend getting the Backup Plus Enclosure... when i receive mines i'll upload pics..PRO:Thunderbolt PortStandard SATA ConnectionMade of good MaterialCON:Does not come with Thunderbolt Cable thats an extra 40 to 50 bucks I got one in the apple store for 40 bucks + taxHas a magnetic base see my videoNeed a Enclosure to hold SSD for proper connection.. I got an empty Backup Plus Enclosure from ebay $30 bucksNo USB 3.0 Header but guess not a big issue...

Big big fan of the Seagate GloFex Pro. I had the FW800 adapter to use instead of the USB one (I don't have USB 3) and all was fine until my Thunderbolt -> FW800 adapter died. Just honestly stopped working one day and took me several hours to determine that it was the adapter plug and not the HDD. Apple would not replace it (it had been 14 months) so rather than pump out another $30 to Apple I put it towards the Thunderbolt Sled.

Nice, clean, easy to use and speeds are good. It can get hot at times and locked up my MacBook Air a couple of times when it (the drive) was under heavy load moving a couple hundred GiB around in continuous use. Never had that problem with the F, but have adjusted my workflow to compensate.

Added bonus, you can use the sled to stick any bare SATA drive on there! Works best with other laptop drives as it does not seem to push enough power to spin up a desktop drive reliably.

Worked with multiple 2.5" form factor drives at amazing speeds. With a 7200 RPM seagate momentus I got well over 50MBs read & write, peaking at 60MBs on some operations when testing via Black Magic Speed Test (Mac OS X).

I'd recommend the device for multiple reasons:
1. In spite of being plastic and light, it feels sturdy. I may update the review in six months to complain if it doesn't hold up, but compared to the average USB "enclosure" for 2.5" drives, it's totally next-gen.
2. It could've come in a plastic baggy because no instructions are needed. You insert your drive, put the cable into the device and the computer and boom it works.
3. The speeds are easily double what most of my USB enclosures have had (never had one over 35MBs).

I purchased this to use with drives without cases. I have a few that I need to transfer data from, and wanted a quick solution. In a nutshell it works. I have gotten good transfer rates from all the drives I have used this to connect to my computer. I had a slower Seagate USB 3.0 HD that is from the same group, and it connected perfectly as well, although the bottom part of this device makes it not as elegant as the USB 3.0 connection. I swapped it out for an SSD, and now it smoking fast.

The downside of this unit is that it does run a bit on the hot side, and it's not a dedicated sled, so it doesn't hold stand alone hard drives in a great way. I think it's a bit pricey as well, especially since it doesn't include a cable. That's why I'm giving it 4 stars

I've been very happy with my purchase, and would recommend this to anyone looking for a way to connect hard drives to their Apple computer and get the fastest speed available from their hard drive.

This is the second time I'm trying to buy the Seagate Backup Plus Portable Thunderbolt Adapter (STAE128)
and I'm not having much success.
The first time I bought this unit it arrived 4 full business days after the tracking site claimed it had been delivered. And then when it did arrive the box was soaking wet AND the unit was not the same model as I had ordered, but a different one. What was delivered was model SRD0001 STAE126, which is an older model.
So back it went.
Then I ordered this same unit a second time. It arrived today, one day earlier than promised which is a good thing, except that the unit was not new. It was used, the box seals were open, the adapter was not in a plastic bag and the protective plastic coating was missing as well. It was an open box product. And on top of it all once again it was the wrong unit in the correct box. The box stated the unit was a Seagate STAE128, yet the model number on the unit itself was SRD0001 STAE126, yes, correct, the older model again.
I buy a lot from Amazon, and generally get excellent service, yet something is wrong when the last 3 products one buys from them ALL arrive the wrong model.

This adapter seems to work with any 2.5" mobile SATA drive. Its main drawback is that it has only one Thunderbolt port so has to be at the end of the chain or plugged directly to the computer. I read the reviews and decided to buy this to use as a drive dock for various bare backup drives I've collected over the years. Works great!

I'm confused what the actual intended use for this adapter is..."For Use With Backup Plus Portable Drives." Backup Plus Drives seem to be complete portable drives with enclosures and their own interface, be it USB 3 or Thunderbolt. So call me baffled by the intended purpose of this drive dock.

I'd give it more stars if it had two ports. I suppose that would make it a lot more expensive?

Seagate should make a drive enclosure similar to this for a similar price. It would be a hit. I haven't seen any on the market.

I am running my late 2013 iMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5 (which came stock with only a 1TB HD) with a SSD via thunderbolt with this Seagate Backup Plus Portable Thunderbolt Adapter. I am processing large RAW files from my Sony A7R with the latest Photoshop CC and so far it is working beautifully and fast on Yosemite OS X 10.10 via thunderbolt and saving to an external HHD on USB3. The best part is I didn't need to open the iMac and risk voiding my warranty to install a SSD and I can easily upgrade to a larger one.
I hope that Seagate will continue producing this model. I would highly recommend this product and Amazon.

Au début je voulais ouvrir mon iMac 27 mi-2011 pour mettre un SSD dedans. J'avais tout le SSD les outils mais pas le temps de l'ouvrir. Et puis j'ai eu vent de se produit, je me suis dit pour 130€ cela m'évite de l'ouvrir avec les risques derrières. Je l'ai donc associé au SSD Transcend 256 Go acheté en promo ici même pour 90€ et c'est vraiment top. Deux petites lumières blanche discrète pour afficher que l'appareil est allumé et que des données circules, et la vitesse du Thunderbolt avec ls SSD impressionne, comment OSX réagi c'est le jour est la nuit par rapport au disque dur qui se trouve par défaut. Plus de bruit et plus besoin d'attendre. Le plus grand bonheur c'est le démarrage du Mac avec l'ouverture de tout les logiciels que j'avais laissé ouvert.
Juste dommage qu'il n'y ai pas de cache pour cacher le SSD comme sur le GoFlex disque SSD
