A fast, reasonably priced SSD-HD SATA drive that's a "Bottleneck Breaker"!

I was starting to wonder why things slowed down on my fast machine with an SSD boot drive and 32GB of RAM? Was it my external Firewire800 and USB 3 drives? People had said they were supposed to be very fast, especially the new USB 3 standard with all the right cabling, etc. Were they not really as fast as advertised? I though the way to really see is invest in a new, guaranteed fast hard drive, so I ordered this SSD-HD SATA combo drive from Amazon. It was the recommendation of a good friend, who is the head of a university computer science IT department. He said he preferred them over SSD or HD solutions, since they are fast and can also be large capacity drives and I have always had a good experience with Seagate products.

I followed his advice and my whole system is running along smoother and measurably quicker. Faster overall drive response time with a setup with an internal SSD boot and application drive and this drive as the primary scratch/cache media drive has my system humming along again. In my experience, beware of giant low priced multiple TB external drives that claim to be fast since they use USB3. What's the drive rotation speed, access time, what's needed for USB 3.0 to work at full speed in your system.

I found that If anything from cables, to the choice of USB hub to system software isn't just right, the speed will drop down to USB 2.0 speed. Even if that doesn't happen, SSD and HDSSD drives leave Firewire and USB 3.0 in the dust. I'm glad I listened to advice and paid a little more for this drive. My slower drives were creating delays and data bottlenecks in a powerful system!

This drive was a good investment, it's very quick, although not as fast as an SSD drive, but still very quick compared to my USB 3.0 and Firewire 800 drives. I would buy another one just like it if finances allowed. :-) Maybe another one just like this one, to create a RAID striped array built with SSD-HD SATA drives for mixing video in Adobe After Effects, rendering 3D or just bulk video format conversions! If you are a media artist or heavy media user you'll be happy with this drive.

A decent HD with an automated flash based read cache (8GB)

Works just fine. No SMR no MTC (the drive doesn't do weird shingled writing, doesn't write cache to other parts of the platters and move it later). I don't know what Seagate is trying to do with other drives they make that are newer than this, but SMR belongs in archive drives (and maybe not even there).

(Normal drive)
Possible read paths:
Direct from the platters
From the platters (cached in flash memory)
From the platters (cached in RAM)

Possible write paths:
Direct to the platters
Cached (and maybe consolidated for a more efficient write) in RAM, then written to the platters

Your data is put on the platter (one time!) and it stays there unless you change it (data loss due to defect is of course possible on any brand hardware). Error rates are about 1 bit per 10^14 (1 in about 11.37 TB).

SMR/MTC drives (Seagate) have a different strategy...

Possible SMR/MTC read paths:
Direct from the platters
From the platters (cached in RAM)
From the platters (cached somewhere else on the platters)
From the platters (cached in flash memory if drive includes flash)

Possible SMR/MTC write paths:
To the platters (but first we need to read* up to ~256MB and write* it somewhere else, then write* it all back with the changes)
Cached (and maybe consolidated for a more efficient write) in RAM, then written to the platters (possibly needing to do the above line)
Cached (and maybe consolidated for a more efficient write) in flash*, then written to the platters (possibly needing to do the first line)
Data sitting on the drive (platters) which you aren't changing AT ALL may be read*, re-written* somewhere else, then re-written* back to where it was.

The non-SMR, non-MTC ST1000DX001 (the drive I bought) takes the data you asked it to write and writes it, once. (subject to the 1 bit per 10^14 read/write error rate -- one time)

Other (Seagate) MTC/SMR drives (not the ST1000DX001) take your data and write/re-read/re-write it possible 1 time, likely 2 times, or possibly 4 (or even more times, see the [*] above). EACH of these reads/writes is subjected to the 1 bit per 10^14 read/write error rate EVERY time. They've effectively made a 5x+ increase in the error rate without doing anything to compensate for it. This also added a lot of complexity overhead (more opportunities for things to go wrong).

ST1000DX001, a drive with simple flash based read caching: would buy
MTC/SMR, a drive with complex platter(w/SMR) and flash/platter read/write caching: serious doubts about buying.

2 years and dead drive.....

Drive failed @ 2-year mark. There was no advanced warning of impending drive failure. I have hardware monitoring software installed and not even so much as a warning that there was an issue with this drive. Booted computer couple of days ago and it simply did not register as being attached. Checked BIOS and drive was not listed in hardware setup. Pretty sad for a newer product; I have drives that are over 10 years old that are still functioning 100%. Warranty support request filed with Seagate.

EDIT: Item returned to Seagate for replacement and they sent a replacement drive with DOM that is a year OLDER than my original drive. Attempted to get call from support; given a 39-minute callback window and over 2 hours later, no callback. Unacceptable customer support... downgraded rating to 1-star!

SSHD TAKES TIME to perform. I got all nervous when initially, my pc booted up around the same time maybe even longer. I restarted 5x in a row and it kept getting better. 3 months or so in though, and I will admit that the startup is nowhere near as advertised. Its closer to HDD than SSD. But with some specific things, like witcher 3, the difference is NIGHT AND DAY. Super crazy fast loading times.

O ya, and 2TB = never care about space again

This is an older 3.5 " SSHD drive (originally manufactured in 2013) but new to me, fits my older MAC. There is no need for additional thermostat to monitor the drive temperature as the Apple sensor connects directly. The optional which would cost money (about £40.00) is required for some fo the later faster SSHD. This drive is a cost effective replacement for the original Apple Mac SATA II drive.

I used Apple's time machine back up recovery process to restore all my data ad OS, so make sure you have a backup of your machine if you intend to do the same.

Due to the age of my Apple Mac (2010) - the online recovery of Mountain Lion, although an option failed, as the OS online is not compatible with my MAC. The use of a time machine backup from external USB drive which I had kept current proved invaluable.

The SSHD Is a good compromise between SSD and HD and much lower cost than SSD and much faster than a conventional HD.

Note: Since I bought this drive last week, the price had gone up approximately 30%., so this drive not quite as cost effective as it was.

After some installation issues (easily fixed with a quick Google and reading instructions!) this has been a wonderful addition to my PC - I can now happy store all my media on one drive, using the others for backups. I'm a casual user and so haven't benchmarked or measured it's speed, but it is speedy enough with no noticeable lag for me. I waited to type up this review so I could give an accurate opinion after using it for a while. Here is my experience with this product, hopefully it'll help you guys out.

Note : I had a few issues initially with this product freezing my PC, but it was down to my PC configuration rather than the product itself and it seemed common across the web. This fixed it for me on Windows 10 anniversary update. This is not a negative against the product, but against how Windows is set up at default. It used to freeze my PC every <10 minutes, not show up on My Computer as having any memory etc. as though it was plugged in but unreadable.

This was fixed easily after going to Power Settings > Drive > Turn off hard disk after > Never

On to the Review:

I use this drive to store all my PC games to it now that they are getting to 50GB per game, I needed an upgrade.
After formatting, I have 3.63TB usable on a Windows 10 Home PC.

Games like Witcher 3 and Battlefield One take less than 20 seconds from the thought entering my head to play it until I'm physically controlling a character in game, giving great speeds for a non Solid State.

If you're looking for a drive upgrade for a good price, this is it, especially for the amount of memory you get.

Installs easily, same as a conventional disk drive. Very quiet though for ultra low noise I recommend rubber mountings.

It takes a few days for it to learn which parts of the disk are getting accessed most (directories, system files, browser files etc) so don't expect it to be much faster than a conventional disk until it has had time to settle in.

I needed an upgrade in speed and size, i wanted a SDD but they are still not in the best price range and i needed at least 4TB. I stumbled across these hybrid drives i had never heard of them before and did a bit of research and took the gamble. It payed off everything runs faster from this drive. I do loads of video editing and when using this drive it has halved my rendering time. It was so easy to install and took less than 5 minutes to format it ready for use. Great product i shall be getting another at some point soon.
