Proven Quality and Performance
Desktop HDDs are the world's most popular desktop storage solutions. With consistent quality and performance-enhancing innovations and features like native command queuing and perpendicular recording, Seagate delivers time—and time again.
Additionally, Desktop HDDs are produced using the most sophisticated manufacturing process in the industry, with a focus on environmental stewardship. Advanced power modes enables you to save more energy while in idle states—without sacrificing performance. Plus, 70 percent or more of the materials used to build Desktop HDD drives are recyclable.
Maximizes Storage Densities
Desktop HDD, 1TB-per-disk technology incorporates 340,000 unique tracks in the width of a single inch. This incredible storage density drives new capacity possibilities and lowers your total storage costs.
Seagate AcuTrac technology enables storage densities with accurate reading and writing to nano-sized tracks that are only 75 nanometers wide! That's about 1/500th the size of the period at the end of this sentence.
Size and Performance
You get more bang for your buck with the industry's first 1TB-per-disk hard drive technology.
Your drive is up to 45 percent faster than the last generation thanks to Seagate OptiCache technology. OptiCache technology combines the latest advances in hard drive microprocessors, DRAM, and proprietary caching algorithms resulting in great performance improvements for you.
The sure way to get native access to hard drives bigger than 2TB is to adopt the new BIOS standard called UEFI. If you're not there yet, Seagate has an alternative.
Free DiscWizard software from Seagate provides you a means to effectively utilize your 3TB and 4TB Seagate Desktop HDDs, even with Windows XP and using the standard PC BIOS.

#1 runs about 6C hotter i.e. 37C at load vs 31C for 4TB drive.
#2 missing holes in the middle of drive for mounting so may be a problem for some. Apparently they add an extra platter to hit 6TB so that's why they had to get rid of middle holes since there was no space left for them and probably why it runs hotter too.
#3 makes more noise than older drive most likely due to extra platters. I have it running in an external dock until I replace one of the drives in my 4 bay Seagate NAS and I can definitely hear it making noise especially when it first starts up or starts working hard. Drive seeking noise not as noticeable on older 2 and 4TB drives.
#4 Performance wise this is probably the fastest mechanical drive I've used in a long time!
200MB/s which is way faster than the typical 120MB/s and even faster than some SSD drives!
See the picture I posted. The slowest speed of this this drive around 167MB/s is the fastest speed for the older 4TB as you can see.
Oh yeah it comes un-formatted so expect to wait a while to do a full format to make sure there were no bad sectors from the start took around 10 hours!
On the other hand the new drives reported extremely low write rates and HD Tune Pro also showed that while the read rate were around 150 MB/s the write rates peaked around 65-128 byte blocks at below 150 then fell from there to low double digits by 8192 bytes which is probably where most large files would be. I tried switching controllers and SATA ports and the results were nearly the same. In desperation I deleted the partitions with Windows' Disk Management, rebooted and then created new partition(s) and retested with HD Tune Pro and now they all preform nearly identically. I have no idea what happened the first time because I think I created the new disks and GPT and the partitions the same way with Disk Manager but they all doing well now. If anyone has any idea about what I experienced I would appreciate a note.
All and all, these are very large, reasonably priced drives for those needing more than 4 or 5 TBs and would recommend them to others but I would always pass on the story of this anomaly that I experienced.
obviously i was concerned with the grinding noise and slow start up so have sent it back and instead went with 2 wd 4tb black drives.
