1. if it's not showing up, clear your desktop and go to "Finder" in the top bar on the left, then "settings" then "sidebar"
2. Go to the "Locations" section and make sure "external disks" has a check next to it so it'll show up. It'll either be on the desktop or in the sidebar when you open a folder
3. Then open "disk utility" by doing a search on the computer
4. Go to the "External" section ONLY (do NOT touch "internal" anything). If nothing is showing, in that same window go to the symbol next to "disk utility" with "view" under it and hit "show all devices"
5. Open the external drive and select the seagate one
6. Click "erase" and choose the mac journal version -- security is extra but i didn't do anything there
7. Complete the erasing and it will reload on your mac formatted to use
Works great - very affordable, just takes that extra step!
I have purchased hard drives from Western Digital before from their G-Drive line and their My Passport line. I have had issues with these and although they were replaced by their customer service team. It was a long arduous process and they even once claimed that the hard drive I purchased directly from their store was a counterfeit (they took this statement back after some time). Due to this, I thought it might be good to try Seagate that seemed to be the other of the two biggest names I saw on external hard drives.
I have been using this hard drive for about the same time as a Western Digital one I got for school and it has not broken down, i haven't lost my files, and there has been no physical damage to it either. Even the cable it came with works after a few months which I cannot say about WD ones.
I have been reading up and see that they are WD fanatics on one side and Seagate fanatics on the other. They had horrible experiences with hard drives crashing from the other brand and praise their side. My personal experience will not tell you everything given that data storage is so fickle, however, at least for me, this Seagate hard drive has worked well for me and I hope it can last a good amount of time.

I have been using this Seagate hard drive for a while and it works perfectly for my offline/off-site backup solution. I love that it is plug-and-play and very easy to use for storing videos, photos, and music. This drive has met my requirements by efficiently transferring files and serving my data storage requirements.
Great price on a gob of external storage. Reasonably quick access times for desktop use, I wasn't looking for a barn-burner, just something to hold digital media and backups. This does the job nicely. However...
Out of the box, the thing goes into sleep mode. A *lot*. The net result is that it makes your Windows PC slower, because it has to spin up EVERY TIME you access the file system. Downloading something? The "Save As" box takes a lot longer to appear, because the drive has to spin up. Looking for that picture of your kids and you on a holiday to upload to social media? Wait a few seconds, because the drive has to spin up when Explorer gets activated. Over time, this adds up and it's frankly unacceptable.
This problem has a resolution, though. Download the Seagate Dashboard software and set sleep time to "never." I really think this is a crap solution though, I have to download a 150MB+ application to simply make the drive behave like almost every other external drive I've ever used? Dumb, Seagate, just dumb. It takes a star away from an otherwise solid product.
