The triangular patterns on both sides aren't heat dispersing vents. Only the bottom and the rear are. Spent three hours to drill all the holes on both sides of the case but didn't help to lower the temperature at all. I have to run the drive w/o the plastic case for it to cool properly. Stick 4 rubber feet on the metal bracket so that the heat from the bottom can escape. Under the same condition, it stays at 42C. At room temperature 26C, the WD/Seagate have stayed at 45/49C respectively (42/44C with air circulation) after hours of copying from the WD to Seagate.
It is surprising Seagate would have used such an ill-designed case for their hard drives for so many years. The bottom vents are basically blocked by the drive itself and the heat from the top cannot escape. Since the case is plastic, you cannot tell how hot the drive is without checking the smart data. This should explain why so many Seagate drives have failed. By comparison, the vertical design of the WD lets the heat escape from the top and the cool air is drawn in from the vents at the bottom naturally. It creates an airflow without any active cooling.
My advice is that if you plan to run it as is, stay away from any Seagate external hard drives with those heat trapping cases. However, if you don't mind running it without the pretty but useless case like I do, the Seagate 8TB is hard to beat for $300 right now.
So what's the issue? In a word it's "heat".
I've left comments on other user reviews but those tend to get buried so I'll repeat my concerns here in my own review. These external drives are built using the Seagate Desktop HDD (formerly Barracuda) models that are also sold as internal drives. They are excellent drives and when properly cooled in a desktop case usually operate at about 35-45 degrees Celsius. However, when mounted in the plastic cases used for the external model listed here they idle at about 48 degrees Celsius and reach temperatures of 60 degrees Celsius and higher when reading and writing data. I've been measuring these temps using the free HD Tune and Crystal Disk Info utilities. Seagate's official position is that those readings aren't valid since they rely on S.M.A.R.T.Read more ›

So far, of the ones I've owned, the best luck I've had is with the Western Digital passport, which has been up and running for several years (a record) for me. My only issue with it is that I've outgrown it. Listen up Seagate - Western Digital has you beat.
We apologize for the problems experienced with your Backup Plus Desktop drive. Certainly it is not typical or expected for these drives to behave this way. I got a DOA drive and then returned it and two days later got a replacement which was also DOA (although in a completely different way -- it would come up and down as being recognized by the system). Similar USB 3.0 drives worked fine in that port, so I'm fairly confident it's not my computer (and I'm an IT tech professional of about 3 decades, if that establishes any credentials).
Part of it may have to do with the way it's shipped -- it was loose in a box about twice its size, rattling around in it (both times). But even if you get a drive that functions I would not count on it functioning long. When it comes to data, if we are going to get two dead drives from a brand new product it does not bode well for long term use.
Let the buyer beware.
