Bought this to replace the WD My Book 4TB which is full. One obvious issue is that the temperature kept rising with continuous access and I had to disconnect it at 55C (room at 22C), just 1C away from tripping the "BE Airflow Temperature". The Seagate specification states it worked up to 60C but I didn't push it because heat kills hard drives based on my experience.

The triangular patterns on both sides aren't heat dispersing vents. Only the bottom and the rear are. Spent three hours to drill all the holes on both sides of the case but didn't help to lower the temperature at all. I have to run the drive w/o the plastic case for it to cool properly. Stick 4 rubber feet on the metal bracket so that the heat from the bottom can escape. Under the same condition, it stays at 42C. At room temperature 26C, the WD/Seagate have stayed at 45/49C respectively (42/44C with air circulation) after hours of copying from the WD to Seagate.

It is surprising Seagate would have used such an ill-designed case for their hard drives for so many years. The bottom vents are basically blocked by the drive itself and the heat from the top cannot escape. Since the case is plastic, you cannot tell how hot the drive is without checking the smart data. This should explain why so many Seagate drives have failed. By comparison, the vertical design of the WD lets the heat escape from the top and the cool air is drawn in from the vents at the bottom naturally. It creates an airflow without any active cooling.

My advice is that if you plan to run it as is, stay away from any Seagate external hard drives with those heat trapping cases. However, if you don't mind running it without the pretty but useless case like I do, the Seagate 8TB is hard to beat for $300 right now.

There are so many Vine reviews (free samples to selected users provided by the manufacturer) for these drives that I felt it necessary to write a review even though I have not yet purchased one from Amazon. I started out with a single 3TB drive of the prior (V1) generation of this family that had the removable base but that failed the Seatools drive self test with too many bad sectors reallocated after less than a year. Seagate sent a a reconditioned V1 drive that died in less than a week after I had restored over 2.5 terabytes of data saved to other devices. While I was waiting for another V1 model to ship Seagate offered to send a V2 drive instead since they didn't have stock for the V1 and I agreed to that. I have since purchased another 3TB V2 model at a local big box store and now sync the two drives using the FreeFileSync program to reduce the risk of losing 3TB of data.

So what's the issue? In a word it's "heat".

I've left comments on other user reviews but those tend to get buried so I'll repeat my concerns here in my own review. These external drives are built using the Seagate Desktop HDD (formerly Barracuda) models that are also sold as internal drives. They are excellent drives and when properly cooled in a desktop case usually operate at about 35-45 degrees Celsius. However, when mounted in the plastic cases used for the external model listed here they idle at about 48 degrees Celsius and reach temperatures of 60 degrees Celsius and higher when reading and writing data. I've been measuring these temps using the free HD Tune and Crystal Disk Info utilities. Seagate's official position is that those readings aren't valid since they rely on S.M.A.R.T.

I purchased this drive to replace another Seagate external hard drive that crashed. Luckily, with this one, I backed up all information onto another drive. However now I am left with yet another brick and this time it only lasted 3 months of very light use. I wish I did not have to live in fear of losing all of my files. Having to purchase multiple backups is getting very expensive. This company needs to build a more reliable product. Hopefully they will honor their limited warranty, but again another hassle to go through. I just want a working hard drive.

I picked this harddrive based on the reviews of other, more pleased, customers. I expect high quality from Seagate, but did not get what I'd hoped for. After only four months of owning this hard drive, it crashed to the point that the data can only be retrieved by a Seagate professional for more than I probably paid for the hard drive. I don't have an alternate recommendation for you, having had these issues with many other brands over the years. It seems to be par for the course that you have to replace these on a regular basis, which is why I went with Seagate - hoping they led the competition, not that they were just one of the pack.

So far, of the ones I've owned, the best luck I've had is with the Western Digital passport, which has been up and running for several years (a record) for me. My only issue with it is that I've outgrown it. Listen up Seagate - Western Digital has you beat.

Dear G. B. Grippin,

I absolutely cannot recommend this product, and I really do like Seagate products in general (having a lot of their external and interal drives on my system).

I got a DOA drive and then returned it and two days later got a replacement which was also DOA (although in a completely different way -- it would come up and down as being recognized by the system). Similar USB 3.0 drives worked fine in that port, so I'm fairly confident it's not my computer (and I'm an IT tech professional of about 3 decades, if that establishes any credentials).

Part of it may have to do with the way it's shipped -- it was loose in a box about twice its size, rattling around in it (both times). But even if you get a drive that functions I would not count on it functioning long. When it comes to data, if we are going to get two dead drives from a brand new product it does not bode well for long term use.

Let the buyer beware.
