I have this same product. What can I say? Thunderbolt speeds are fast! So fast that the drive is now the bottleneck! Another great part is that if I have multiple drives, they daisy chain so all I need is one to be somewhat close to the computer and the rest can be tucked away and I only need one cable to plug into my laptop.

However, don't pay $400 for this! Go to Costco, buy the 3TB USB 3.0 drive for $129, go to the Apple Store and pick up the Thunderbolt adapter for $189 and a Thunderbolt cable if you don't already have one, and you can get the entire setup for $318 or $367 if you need the cable. Plus, you'll have a USB 3.0 cable which can be handy and you'll still have the USB 3.0 adapter which may come in handy somewhere down the road...

RAID four of these together and you'll have a fast 12TB drive!

Fast and awesome. Paid $199 and that is an amazing deal for a thunderbolt drive! 3tb for only 50 bucks more than the bare thunderbolt adapter. There really is not better deal. Also comes with a TB cable which saves you another 50 bucks!!!

I really like this concept and being able to use this with a number of different SATA drives is cool, but the idea that I have to spend $479 for this combo when i could just as easily buy a 4 TB drive for $279.99 and the adapter for $189.pp for a total of $469 tells me that the pricing is ridiculously out of whack. Even more out of whack when you buy a 3TB at $179.99 and the adapter at $189.99 for a total of $369.98 - a $100 savings!

That said, before I return this combo, the drive is fast with Thunderbolt, not "I'm a commercial video producer fast" but blows away USB/Firewire. I also daisychain this with an HP 24" monitor using the Apple adapter and it works like a charm.

When the hype surrounding Thunderbolt dies down and prices drop I would expect this to become an affordable solution. But the Seagate GoFlex 3TB w/ Thunderbolt adapter is not a reasonably priced solution. Buy this combo piecemeal and save $100!

This drive, when functioning, worked great- fast, quiet, and transparent to my workflow. When my original purchased drive failed some months into my ownership, Seagate promptly sent me a replacement. Good so far. Then after two subsequent years the replacement drive stopped being recognized by my iMac and started making clicking noises. This drive comes with a 3 year warranty. When contacted, Seagate ultimately stated "...please be informed that the warranty for any drive is considered only from the purchased date of the drive and it is not considered from the replaced date." That means they only cover one drive- if the replacement fails, the consumer is on their own.

This policy surprised me, but more surprising was that it took me 6 emails- each response coming from a different individual- to have the policy above explained to me. Communication was frustrating and redundant documents were requested. The first 5 responses indicated they either didn't understand my failed replacement drive situation or they were unable to articulate their understanding. At one point I was told my warranty expired the same month that I bought the original drive (they subsequently apologized), and there is no option on the site that I found to actually call and talk to a human being.

These mechanical drives are going to fail, but at this price I expect quality support- if not a fully warrantied replacement product.

Be warned: this drive runs hot, very hot compared to the alternatives. I have used it for 1.5 yrs now and it finally started giving my motherboard problems. This design of Thunderbolt gives the drive direct access to the CPU. My motherboard was not able to boot with the drive attached. I detached the Thunderbolt cable and system running fine again. The reason the drive runs hot is that the Thunderbolt electronics extend up the side of the drive and it is not able to breathe. This is a good idea but they need to make some changes.

This Thunderbolt hard drive did exactly whatit said in the tin. It makes my other external HD seem slow and noisy by comparision. Everything wou need is included in the pack to - no need to go and buy additional things like cables etc.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This drive has the same beautiful, soft rubber covered chassis as their other MAC versions that come with their non-thunderbolt bases. It really is fantastic aesthetically; seems like that doesn't matter much, but worth noting.

To make it clear, you need to buy a different Seagate base if you want it to run on USB - this particular version ONLY has Thunderbolt ports.

Interesting that one reviewer noted that one can use their docks to dock other hard drives - at least internal drives. I hadn't noticed before, but instead was always somewhat annoyed that although they use standard SATA ports, the female ports on the actual Seagate drives are actually recessed and off to the side so that you cannot use the drive with a third-party dock, and therefore have to buy their bases, making the whole set up what I term "semi-proprietary".

The bottom part of the actual dock is thinner than their other docks, with the part off to the side (to house the extra circuitry?) That is kind of a shame, but may get smaller with time.

In this case, I was actually impressed with Seagate's online support (I usually don't need help with such matters): when I formatted this to NTFS, I quickly realized that Windows 64bit and even Paragon 2010 (out of date) have all kinds of issues with drives over 2.2TB, and surprisingly, Seagate's website had all the information listed concisely, and offered a free tool to format the drive and it now reads easily on all my Win7 computers. I was in a rush at that moment, so I'm grateful I didn't have to do further research.

Like others have said, I am still a bit skeptical of diving into brand new technologies very early, so I'll let that be your judgment call. I usually give standard drives a four, but I guess I'll go with a five this time because I thought Seagate's support was quite adequate when I actually needed it.
