As I said, I don't have "normal" use cases, but many times, I get to see just what consumer/prosumer drives are made of. For example, I've had Samsung 960s that are still in SQLServers after 4 years and have plenty of wear left. Unless it's something odd, like a green drive, or magnetic archive drive, that the total use case differs for, then they should perform, albeit at a lower level.
To begin with, I bought a dozen of these drives, in two batches of six over a 4 month period. Within 6 months, 8 out of the 12 had failed. Sent them back to Seagate, had them replaced, and 6 of THOSE 8 didn't even make it through the initial format of the drive. Sent those 6 back to Seagate, had them replaced, and 4 of THOSE didn't even make it through the initial format.
I've put these in (a) servers, (b) desktops, and (c) little Intel NUCs. They've failed in every one of them.
When they do work, they're "ok". I've stayed away from Seagate for YEARS due to this, and throught I'd come back for a bit ... they still make crap drives.
Back to Hitachi Ultrastars, Sandisk SSDs, WD SSDs, and Samsung SSDs, with Intel DCs for the servers.
When you install the drive and begin firing up your games, you may be upset to discover that it's not at all faster than the 500 GB or 1 TB drive that came with your PS4 to begin with. Really, it's not one bit faster. You can time them and they load games and levels with seconds of one another. After seeing this, you may ask why you bothered paying a premium for the drive. After all, there are reliable, cheaper 2.5" 2TB drives on the market?
The answer lies in how the drive works and how it uses the onboard 8 GB of faster flash space. The drive has onboard intelligence the monitors your activity. As you do things like repeatedly launch your current favorite game, the drive takes note of this and begins storing that game's or games' data in flash. As a result, subsequent loads become faster and faster, usually maxing out around the 5th load. By then, you'll see times dramatically faster, usually on par with SSDs. If you're a typical PS4 user, mostly sticking with one or two favorites of the moment, this drive will be immensely beneficial in terms of performance once you give it a week or two to learn your habits (yes, you can shortcut this by opening, quitting completely, and then reopening your favorite game a few times in a row).
Now, if you're not a typical user, and find you regularly jump around to lots of different game and activities, then this drive probably isn't for you. Its performance gains rely on your having data you access with frequency. If that's not your behavior, it'll never be able to pin down on flash what you're likely to reach for next, instead having to load from the slow 5400rpm platter each time. In that case, a true SSD is your only hope for a noticeable improvement in speed, but then you're likely sacrificing storage space for speed. Used as intended, this drive offer the potential for both.
After a few web searches on these symptoms, I admitted to myself: I'd received a bad drive.
The reason why this review is 5 stars is because of Amazon's response. When I reported that there was a problem with the drive, within two days I had a new drive in my hands. When I installed this one in my PS4, the initialization procedure went smoothly. The USB stick (no different from before) was accessed immediately, and the drive initialization just took a couple of minutes. The new drive with its 64MB cache and 8GB flash is definitely "zippier" than the drive that came with the PS4, a 500MB HGST with 16MB cache.
Given the performance of the working drive, and Amazon's swift replacement of the bad drive, I'm giving this a 5-star rating.
Top reviews from other countries
My new drive lives in the plug-in slot in my laptop where the system drive used to be, and an internal SSD has taken over as the C: boot drive with all the system and program files etc. The new 1TB drive is now D: and is used for storing data, mostly HD/4K video and stills while I'm working on them before they go off to their final usage. It is quicker and cheaper to move a box of ten 1TB drives around by courier than to use the internet to send this much data.
Drive Management in W7P formats the new drive in less than half a minute, giving an NTFS formatted working capacity (non-bootable and without O/S) of 1,000,068,635,870,144 bytes (931GB). After a thorough search taking some time the standard block check failed to find any bad blocks or sectors. Big file transfers approach the maximum speed of the drive at about 122MBytes/s write and 130Mbytes/s read, smaller files can be twice the speed if cached on the SSD but most are not, even so I am very happy with this drive.
The drive works just fine otherwise, but it for some reason freezes the image of the game for 1-2 seconds, while sound and everything else works just fine. Never had the issue before, and it happens in any game I run on it, be it Spiral Knights, or Team Fortress 2.
Not sure what would cause this, but it's definitely a let-down, since my old 2TB SeaGate HDD is starting to show its age a little (I bought it in 2011).
Sure it's a good price, but I'd be happy to know if this is to be expected from a Hybrid drive, or if this is abnormal.
it's slightly thinner and noticeably lighter than the Samsung drive that was OEM in the PS4.
When you google upgrade PS4 to 2TB this is the drive of choice.
It's a hybrid drive so it's lighter and faster than a regular drive.
A compromise from the high price of a full SSD drive.
It's awesome. Get it!
You'll need to back up your PS4 drive, so get a WD passport drive for doing that if you don't have one and plan to upgrade your PS4.
