(edit) I think it's been over 1 and half years, both of my Seagate 1tb drives have been going strong, no errors, click etc. (knock on wood) Looking at another this christmas, or even a bigger size.===(edit) 9 months in:I just bought my second 1tb drive, I now have 1tb external and 500 on my laptop, with a little 320 usb portable drive. All Seagate except the little travel drive. I have had my 2nd 1tb Seagate for about a week and like the first drive no problems. Maybe there was a batch of bad drives to get the negative review? Not sure but I am happy with my purchase. Cheers! (great prices on these drives everywhere)===(edit) 6 months in:I have to say I have not had a single problem with this drive. No clicking, no loss of information. I was VERY worried after seeing all of the negative reviews on Amazon. But (knock on wood) NO problems with the drive. I now have a Macbook Pro and have USB 2.0 and the transfers are much faster than the 1.0 (or 1.1?) usb connection I had. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another Seagate drive again. An will purchase another one of these this Christmas. Cheers.===I have had my drive for one month and have not had any major issues with the drive. I am on a Mac and bought this at a brick and mortar store instead of online. The prices were the same but the cost of shipping and wait made my decision. As well as the review about bad drives bought from Amazon. The prices seem to be fluctuating week to week so I would check around, but Amazon seems to have a decent price online.Firstly, there are many ranging review most people seem to either love the drive and have no problems or received a DOA drive. (reviews on newegg were similar)First thing I did was reformat since I am on a Mac. (open disk utilities) Size comes to 931.39 gb.The usb cord could have been longer, nothing major. There is no on/off switch. The drive "sleeps" after a period of unuse. Which is nice to have but can be annoying when it take a few seconds to "wake" back up. (about 5-10 seconds) When you power down the computer the drive seems to go to a deep sleep with front indicator lights going off. (again with no power switch no way to "fully" turn it off)With a new drive the initial copying of data is the longest. I am replacing a 500 gb drive and moved over about 400gb and it took about 12 hours. (external USB drive - to - external USB drive, which is very slow anyways) Moving about 200 gb from my internal drive to the Seagate took about 6 hours. Speed is abit slower than I was expecting from this drive. I have a 500gb Seagate in a Vantec case and it is about 20% faster than this drive. All in all I am happy with my purchase, I got a great price on the drive. (100 us) It looks good on the desktop. Slim footprint when standing. It could be faster. (there is a firewire + usb version of this drive also)I haven't had a problem, but the negative reviews kind of ruins your peace of mind about the drive though. I felt like I was "taking a chance". But, knock on wood in 15+yrs of computing, about 6 external/internal hd's, I have not had an issue with Seagates, which I why I took the chance on this drive.

I read some of the comments about the older (smaller) models (1TB, 1.5TB), and there were several bad reviews particularly about the 1.5TB hard drive. Well, there were many good ones too, but of course statements like "lasted only 2 weeks", "could not access my data anymore" and so on are kind of alarming.

Anyway, because I have already 2 old Maxtor external hard drives (250 and 300 GB), and they accompanied me successfully now during the past 6-8 years even when moving from Europe to USA, from USA back to Europe and then back to USA again, and because I found the listed price to be very convincing to try, I ordered this new Seagate 2TB external hard drive end of December 2009.
It arrived quickly and is working absolutely reliably, quietly and absolutely satisfyingly for me.
I set the power management to shut it off after 3 minutes idle time (as it was also for the older ones). So, you can imagine, I am not sending huge amounts of data in a short period of time.
But I copied about 300GB of data to it right away. Not a problem.
And generally the connected computer (and others on my private network using the shared drives) is on continuously mostly during the day.
Everything is still working. There are no problems connecting after system reboots, no strange clicking sounds, no lost data (yet - knock, knock, knock).

It was totally easy to install, I guess I won't need the installed SW, my daughter likes particularly its "cool" design, and it gave me so far only the best impression possible.
A great purchase - so far.
Based on the other mentioned reviews, of course I am looking also forward to mid and long term experiences hoping the drive will continue serving me as well as it does now.

Only negative comment : the "revival" period from the idle state back to active state takes about 15 seconds (about 5 seconds longer than the old Maxtor units).

I love my Seagate ST310005FDA2E1-RK FreeAgent Desk 1 TB hard drive! While I lived in Germany, I was told by high tech people that Seagate made the best kind of external hard drive on the market. Since this was four years ago, I purchased the model that was the most up-to-date with the most memory. So today, it is considered to be an older model and has less memory than other external hard drives. But I loved it and had no problems with it. On several occasions, I carefully packed it in my carry on and took it with me while I traveled abroad.

However, because I do much art work on the computer which takes up much space, it took only a few years to fill up this external hard drive. Further, both my husband and I were using this hard drive to store files, so that hard drive filled up twice as fast. So at Christmastime this year, when I received an Amazon gift card, I was tickled to find that Amazon also sold Seagate external hard drives. The first thing I did was use my gift card to purchase another Seagate hard drive. And because the 1 TB FreeAgent had the highest rating of all of the Seagate external hard drives; and because it was rated with five stars by the most number of people, I purchased it.

Like the other users, I think my new external hard drive is awesome. It has some features that my old one doesn't, such as turning off automatically, whenever I turn off my computer. It operates even more efficiently than my old one. And wow! All that space! I think it will take me a much longer time to use it up this time around.

By the way, I gave my old Seagate external hard drive to my husband. It's working great for him. And now, both of us have our own external hard drives all to ourselves!

I normally do not return things I buy for one reason or the other. By this drive becomes defective within hours of my receiving it.

I have an older Seagate Freeagent (500G), and several WD mybook, a Maxtor 1-touch, SimpleTech USB, Baffalo NAS, some USB enclosure that I put regular ATA drive in. I have gone through lots of this kind of stuff, but this one is the only one that failed within hours of use.

The drive looks pretty good, granted I am not picky when it comes to how they look, and easy to setup. Unlike WD's "virtual CD ROM", Seagate's software does not insist on running itself every time the drive is plugged in. I started copying stuff from my old drive to the new drive, and it says it will take 5 hours and some minutes. I walked away, knowing those time estimate is usually for reference only, but when I checked back, I see the dreaded "destination not available..." message. OK. I thought my computer or the USB drive might have gone to sleep and caused this error, so I restarted the copying process. And then, it happened. The drive started to flash on and off quickly, and making really load clicking noise. It almost feel like the drive itself was stucked in some infinite loop of booting up. I touch the drive and make sure it was not over heated. Could not figure out what was causing the problem, I unplugged the USB from my computer, and went to bed. This morning, I plugged the drive back, and it seems to be working just fine, so I tried the copying files process again, but before any files was copied over, the drive was doing the flashing and noise thing again, but this time, it quiet itself down after about 2 minutes. The drive is still not usable, so I started the Amazon return process.

When I read there is more people rated this item 1 than 5, I should known to stay away. Well, listen learned.
