Anyway, because I have already 2 old Maxtor external hard drives (250 and 300 GB), and they accompanied me successfully now during the past 6-8 years even when moving from Europe to USA, from USA back to Europe and then back to USA again, and because I found the listed price to be very convincing to try, I ordered this new Seagate 2TB external hard drive end of December 2009.
It arrived quickly and is working absolutely reliably, quietly and absolutely satisfyingly for me.
I set the power management to shut it off after 3 minutes idle time (as it was also for the older ones). So, you can imagine, I am not sending huge amounts of data in a short period of time.
But I copied about 300GB of data to it right away. Not a problem.
And generally the connected computer (and others on my private network using the shared drives) is on continuously mostly during the day.
Everything is still working. There are no problems connecting after system reboots, no strange clicking sounds, no lost data (yet - knock, knock, knock).
It was totally easy to install, I guess I won't need the installed SW, my daughter likes particularly its "cool" design, and it gave me so far only the best impression possible.
A great purchase - so far.
Based on the other mentioned reviews, of course I am looking also forward to mid and long term experiences hoping the drive will continue serving me as well as it does now.
Only negative comment : the "revival" period from the idle state back to active state takes about 15 seconds (about 5 seconds longer than the old Maxtor units).
However, because I do much art work on the computer which takes up much space, it took only a few years to fill up this external hard drive. Further, both my husband and I were using this hard drive to store files, so that hard drive filled up twice as fast. So at Christmastime this year, when I received an Amazon gift card, I was tickled to find that Amazon also sold Seagate external hard drives. The first thing I did was use my gift card to purchase another Seagate hard drive. And because the 1 TB FreeAgent had the highest rating of all of the Seagate external hard drives; and because it was rated with five stars by the most number of people, I purchased it.
Like the other users, I think my new external hard drive is awesome. It has some features that my old one doesn't, such as turning off automatically, whenever I turn off my computer. It operates even more efficiently than my old one. And wow! All that space! I think it will take me a much longer time to use it up this time around.
By the way, I gave my old Seagate external hard drive to my husband. It's working great for him. And now, both of us have our own external hard drives all to ourselves!
I have an older Seagate Freeagent (500G), and several WD mybook, a Maxtor 1-touch, SimpleTech USB, Baffalo NAS, some USB enclosure that I put regular ATA drive in. I have gone through lots of this kind of stuff, but this one is the only one that failed within hours of use.
The drive looks pretty good, granted I am not picky when it comes to how they look, and easy to setup. Unlike WD's "virtual CD ROM", Seagate's software does not insist on running itself every time the drive is plugged in. I started copying stuff from my old drive to the new drive, and it says it will take 5 hours and some minutes. I walked away, knowing those time estimate is usually for reference only, but when I checked back, I see the dreaded "destination not available..." message. OK. I thought my computer or the USB drive might have gone to sleep and caused this error, so I restarted the copying process. And then, it happened. The drive started to flash on and off quickly, and making really load clicking noise. It almost feel like the drive itself was stucked in some infinite loop of booting up. I touch the drive and make sure it was not over heated. Could not figure out what was causing the problem, I unplugged the USB from my computer, and went to bed. This morning, I plugged the drive back, and it seems to be working just fine, so I tried the copying files process again, but before any files was copied over, the drive was doing the flashing and noise thing again, but this time, it quiet itself down after about 2 minutes. The drive is still not usable, so I started the Amazon return process.
When I read there is more people rated this item 1 than 5, I should known to stay away. Well, listen learned.
