- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2011I purchased this external HDD because it was on-sale at a reasonable price and filled the need for a large capacity external HDD that takes its power from the computer vs. requiring an external power supply.
Other reviewers have stated that this was not a good price for the capacity. They stated that this item could be purchased for less money at WalMart. I paid US$89 with free shipping and no sales tax. In my state, WalMart had this item on sale only one time for slightly more money and I would be required to pay sales tax. Normal price was significantly higher. The regular price for this item at Best Buy, Comp USA, or other retail stores was more. I looked at other on-line stores and could not find this same HDD for less money (taking into account shipping charges).
Other reviewers have stated that they could get more HDD capacity for less money by using an internal HDD docked in a special holder. This is true but those are not portable and are bulky. Normally these portable external HDD's are purchased to carry around with you transporting your large files with minimal size and bulk. This drive is good for that purpose.
I will say that the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex drives are slightly larger (mainly in the thickness dimension) than the W.D. passport drives. The difference is minimal and doesn't really affect the portability.
The exterior case of the Seagate drive is a glossy plastic that can scratch fairly easily. Western Digital cases are usually matte and don't show scratches like the glossy case does. Drive performance is not affected by external scratches. I purchased an external HDD case to protect the drive from scratches, bumps, and minimal drops.
These Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex drives have options for different connectors such as the USB 2.0, USB 3.0, and esata. I don't presently have a computer with a USB 3.0 connection option and I have only one that has a esata port. I do like the option to change out the connector and cable for higher transfer speeds which is not an option on the Western Digital passport drives that I have.
There has been a lot of discussions on whether it was worth it to purchase the different cables with different connectors. I have no dog in that fight. I just like to have options in the future as
technology changes and I want to access files I have previously stored on that drive.
I cannot speak to the durability of this drive. I have only had this drive for about 3 weeks and it has not failed yet. My previous external HDD's I have purchased are all Western Digital. Since I have never had one fail (I have owned one for 3 years), I have been very happy with those. The best price I could get on a Western Digital external HDD of similar size and capacity was about 25% more expensive. I decided to try the Seagate drive because of the lower cost/GB and the choice of connectors.
Use of the Seagate HDD was easy and painless. It really is plug-n-play for Microsoft Windows (TM) operating system users. I was able to plug it into the port on my laptop with XP professional and on my laptop with Windows 7 and backup files and access files immediately. I didn't have to download software or anything. I have recently purchased a Western Digital external HDD that wouldn't work until I loaded their software. Even then, I couldn't access the drive through normal means and only can backup. It is irritating!
So far I am very pleased with this drive.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2010This review is immediately after opening and using.
Well packaged unit. Cable is possibly a hair short, but seems adequate for my needs.
I like the fact that it is a bit future proof, and system proof - all I need to do is purchase a new cable for either USB 3.0 or Fire Wire 800. Slick adaption.
I ordered the Blue, quite attractive, and very small. Runs dead silent, and barely warm to the touch.
LED's are a pleasant cool white, and not overly bright.
The included backup software sets up quickly (Window XP), and in auto-run mode, nice touch. Only minor exception, registration is a bit long in the tooth.
The Memeo software is nice, easy to use, and fairly intuitive.
I think that from opening package to beginning the back-up process, probably was less that 10 minutes. That included some poking around time, and an automatic update to software.
The Memeo software automatically notified me of impending update, only required a few minutes.
Memeo has included Seagate Dashboard, which allows clear, yet simple monitoring of progress.
Allow some time for initial back-up, I am still watching that occur.
Hard drive is adequate in speed, quite functional.
All in all, initial impression is quite favorable. If I experience any issues that you might want to know, I will update this post.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2010There are a lot of external drives on the market right now, but this is the drive that I have been waiting for.
I've read a lot of complaints, but I don't share any of them - here is why I love this drive:
I love being able to go from Mac to PC seamlessly. I use my drive to store photos and movies and I can take my GoFlex with me to a friends and we can watch my movies on their Media server. I can take my GoFlex to the office and listen to ALL of my music on my work PC. I can take my GoFlex on a flight and just plug in without worrying about an external power source to watch movies or listen to my music. I've read some complaints about the USB 2.0 cable (and other cables) being too short for this drive, personally I love them - I don't need 3 feet of cable for a drive that's going to be sitting on the desk, in fact, adding more cable length would just make everything LESS portable. (when I use the computer on my lap, say at an airport, the drive sits nicely on the outside of leg).
Connections:
I've had several external drives and the smaller and more portable they become the cheaper and smaller the connections become. I've accidentally lost connection with several drives in the middle of a major data transfer because the min-usb cables they use now are so fragile and easily undone. Not so is the case with the GoFlex these connections are bomb proof and I love it! Also - I never have to worry about the power source becoming disconnected because it's powered by the connection cable (USB/Firewire/eSata)
1. Portability - No power brick and cables to lug around. Everything you need in a nice, compact form factor.
2. High Capacity - 1 Terabyte
3. Speed - good at USB 2.0 - great at Firewire 800 - haven't tried the eSata
4. Cross Platform Capability - Go from Mac to PC or vice versa.
5. Strong cable connections - these cables are connected and they're not coming loose until *you* unplugged them.
Configuring the drive is as easy as pie, you plug the drive in and it asks if you'd like to configure the drive as a PC+Mac or Mac only drive, because of the different file structures if you select PC + Mac you won't be able to use the drive as a Time Machine Back Up Drive (and the instructions tell you as much). I have a Macbook Pro - and I chose PC + Mac because I wanted the cross compatibility. Making this choice took a single click of the mouse and I was done. It makes more sense to use a networked or desktop drive for your Time Machine Back Ups anyway. The primary purpose of this drive for me, was to store and transport media like movies, music and photos.
Included Backup Software and Encryption -
Almost all drives come with these types of extraneous software. If you're using a Mac - I'd strongly advise you to utilize Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner for your backups. If you're using a PC, I'd suggest using Windows 7 Back Up or one of the Norton Back Up products. While most any external drive comes pre-loaded with this type of software, GoFlex is the first one I've used that has allowed the user to DELETE these programs, and that works for me!
Speed:
I tried this drive with the 2.0 and the Firewire 800 cables ($20 extra) - I found the speed was very good with the 2.0 and excellent with the Firewire 800 cable. I'm able to transfer large files quickly and have no problem watching HD movies in a variety of file formats.
Appearances - It feels good and looks good, I don't like the glossy finish though, as other reviewers have noted, it's a fingerprint magnet. I'd love a bamboo or aluminum case for this drive!
Reliability- I've had it for a few weeks now, using it everyday without any issues - I'll post an update in 6 months or so.
Cons: I wish there was a rebate for at least one secondary connection, I wish the case wasn't a fingerprint magnet, other than that, I'm very happy with this drive!
