So I started by removing the software from the drive, then just using the drive as a back up and to copy some work files to. All seemed fine, then took to work and tried to update a file and found out the the whole drive is read only format, no update capabilities allowed from another machine. Did some more reading and discovered that if I Format the drive completly, (don't do the quick format) do a full format which will take about 1 hour per 100 Gig, so make sure you have plenty of time to do this. When your done the drive will be free of Seagate's software and read only formats for file updates. The drive will work just like a jump drive allowing you to take it from one computer to another, update files as you see fit, back up files and so on...you get the picture.
I think if Seagate wants to keep their good name, they need to offer better instructions on their products and they should not pre-load this software on their drives. All of the issue, at least most of them, appear to be with this software and not really the drive itself. At least this is my finding after I performed this format, the drive is now what I expected to use it for.
So for a rating, out of the box, I give it a 1 STAR, because I had to figure this out, and spend 5+ hours to format the drive.
Rating after the format, I give it 5 STARS!
I hope others find this review helpful, as I am a little tech savy, but no comparison to most of you smart people out there.
It comes with 2 versions of backup software plus some trial versions of programs for syncing and sharing files. Between my 3 Seagate hard drives, I have tried out both of the backup programs included on these hard drives, but since my 1TB is mostly used for extra space I have chosen to just copy files to it manually. I'm very set in my ways and this is how I've always backed up files, whether to another hard drive or to CDs or DVDs so this is what I do on this hard drive. I've used the backup software on my GoFlex Slim though since I am primarily using it for backup and the backup software is easy to use. I like that it automatically syncs files whenever plugged into your computer.
The GoFlex Ultra Portable (1TB) is a little bigger than my 500gb, so it doesn't fit into the GoFlex Net or the GoFlex TV but it can easily be plugged in with the USB port on those products. It is still small and compact enough to not take up much space in your laptop bag or on your desk.
As for speed of file transfer, I use USB 2.0 and I would say it is about the same speed as any other portable hard drive I have used. I am not sure if USB 3.0 would speed it up all that much because I've never used 3.0.
Installation is really easy - just plug in and run the setup file. You can choose which software you want to install, with a choice between the 2 backup programs - a basic one and a premium one, plus the trial software included. Once it is installed all you have to do is let the backup program scan your files and tell it to back up your files. I did run into a problem on my GoFlex Slim of the basic backup program not letting me select certain folders to back up instead of backing up my whole C drive. Not sure if that is a problem on the 1TB, but considering 1TB is plenty of space for all my files I didn't try to set certain folders to back up.
I give this hard drive 5 stars. I haven't really found any cons to it!
I purchased this one for my ex based on Amazon reviews and it is basically a plug and play unit - coming up on her Mac portable as soon as we plugged it in and with a few instructions from me she was backing up her computer hard drive. Mine has a metal case - hers is plastic.
She is certainly less computer savvy than I am, and was pleased with how easy it was to plug in and get "worry free" about losing data for some yearly government reports she has to do. (And yes, it did take her losing and having to re-enter a couple of months worth of data to agree to go to a backup system). I call that an ERL (Experience Related Learning).
I would assume this is just as easy to install and operate on a PC.
