Seagate 1TB Laptop Gaming SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive) SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 2.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive (ST1000LM014)
The linked drive is the same brand. It's the same capacity. It has the same read and write speed and the same cache size. I was comparing the two when I received this Playstation Upgrade drive and realized they even have the same model number printed on the drive itself. In short, there are absolutely no differences between the two whatsoever. They are the same product in different boxes. The Playstation branded drive is about thirty bucks more expensive.
The drive comes with a warranty book and an instruction pamphlet. The installation guide advises you to "refer to your Sony PlayStation's documentation and online help for instructions on how to install your Seagate game drive." The instructions cover eleven languages and still fit on a 3x5 inch piece of paper. I suspect this is because there are multiple models of Playstation 3s and will likely be more models of Playstation 4.
In Seagate's defense, I've installed other drives in my PS3 and just installed this one into my PS4. It's extremely easy to do. I needed no instructions, but youtube has hundreds of examples of someone pulling out the hard drive and replacing it with another. Sony did a great job making its game consoles easy to upgrade (because with more space, you'll buy more of their games, of course).
The drive itself is phenomenal. It is such a good upgrade that I think Sony should just install these in their playstations in the factory. The larger capacity drive is great, but the real benefit for me is that by the third of fourth time I play a game, the load times drop substantially. I'm playing Bloodborne and Phantom Pain on PS4, and both had many loading screens. Those wait times are down to what feels like a third of the time.
Here's how the drive works: The normal technology for hard drives are magnetic platters that spin for data access. These are inexpensive to make, so you can have huge data storage. The newer technology is flash drives, like in a USB stick or a cell phone. The data is accessed without moving parts and is much faster to load, but it's also more expensive. A hybrid drive like this one has both. The smaller flash part of the drive will store the data you have been loading recently, so you get the fast load speeds for stuff you use a lot, but also the large data capacity for the rest of your games and movies. When you load something the first time, it's the slower, normal speed, and when you load something again, it's faster. For PS4 games, this is great. I will play the same game repeatedly until I move on to the next one and play it repeatedly. Perfect for a hybrid drive because most of the times I play the game, it will be the 'cached' faster SSD speed.
I've been using Seagate drives for years and have four in use every day in my home. I have never experienced a hardware failure from any of their products, despite having problems with some of their competitors. Seagate does make reliable stuff.
So, in summary, the product itself is awesome. Installing it is easy. The benefits are readily apparent. But it really leaves a bad impression to realize that this is an identical hard drive to Seagate's laptop hybrid SSD/HDD. A commenter to my review says that Seagate actually charges the same per drive and the issue is with the store, so this doesn't seem to be anything underhanded on Seagate's part.
Take my advice and purchase the drive I linked at the top of the review. It's the same one, and it really is worth the money for a much faster loading time.
