The drive definitely increases the boot-up speed but I am not sure I would call it "SSD-like." It's nowhere near as fast as a full SSD but is definitely faster than a standard SATA hard drive. It used to take about 3 minutes from start-up to a useable system. That time has been cut to about 1:45 and I no longer see a beach-ball during boot-up. Once booted, I have not experienced an increase in speed.
If you are looking to upgrade from a smaller hard drive to a 500GB hard drive, I would spend the extra $30. If you already have a 500GB and want to get "SSD-like" speeds I would recommend passing on a hybrid drive. The increase in speed is not worth $130. Especially if you keep your system running most of the time.
I installed this unit in my wife's early 2011 MBP (non Retina) replacing her 5400rpm 320GB Hitachi drive. Copied the drive over with Carbon Copy Cloner, 10 screws to open the bottom case, 2 more to release the drive, pulled the old drive and put the new one in - buttoned it up and we were in business.
After launching/quitting her favorite apps a few times (along with a few reboots) the machine is definitely much snappier.
Easy upgrade and a good compromise versus a similarly sized SSD that would likely have been overkill for what my wife does on her laptop.
I'll keep them for lower risk use cases, but really feel like I was foolish purchasing them.
I have to say that it works perfect for me. It is very fast from the first moment. Easy to install. Of course it vibrates a little bit more than the original 5600rpm that I had... but which HDD of 7200rpm does not vibrate more than 5600rpm one??
I also read that the drive was starting and stopping many times. I have to say that sometimes you can hear that the drive is doing something, but for instance right now the drive is just spinning constantly.
I totally recommend buying this HDD as it is much faster than a regular 7200rpm. And in addition, it is a very good HDD. Probably the big brother of 750gb is even better. I read that the algorithm to learn the repetitive actions is better than in the 500gb, but it was too expensive for my budget.
So far, I do recommend it. I give it 4 stars because I think that 5 stars is perfection and the drive is not perfect but almost.
