There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
This would all be fine if there was a quick and easy fix for the problem but that would be too simple for Seagate. Instead, I searched through scores and scores of articles, forums, downloaded and installed various drivers to try and remedy the solution...hell, I temporarily became an IT technician in my attempt to restore this hard drive and recover my files. Seagate reps weren't particularly helpful and kept pointing me to articles on their site that I'd already read and found useless for solving the issue. Finally I realized that the amount of time I spent troubleshooting this issue, I could have spent editing my footage.
So I cut my losses.
Thankfully I had backed up my precious footage on a large flash drive that doesn't crash. So I got a refund, purchased a WD drive and haven't looked back since. This review is for the potential buyers like me who tend to ignore negative reviews with the thought, "It probably won't happen to me." Yes, I thought that, and unfortunately, I was wrong.
Don't do it.
Thankfully this is being used as backup disk, so no data was lost.
Not happy about either the failure or having to wrestle with Seagate to find a solution. :-(
***** UPDATE 8/17/2017 *****
As expected, the warranty return process was horrific. Spent the better part of any hour to merely log in and submit the warranty return. Needed to try multiple browsers and start over multiple times after the system didn't recognize Model Number, Serial Number and Captcha input. I think that they have made these form fields Case Sensitive. It's almost as if they want to discourage successful completion of the process....or don't care enough to make the process work properly.
Of course, I have to pay for the return and then get a refurb back. That's their warranty deal. Let's see what happens next. Sigh...
Having recently re-browsed the Amazon reviews for this product, I saw some people complaining that their drive had failed after x months having ordered it around the same time as me. This prompted me to fully check my drive's health so that I could at least be reassured that it is in full working order for the time being. I ran a read test on Windows using HD Tune Pro since that's where my drive was plugged in at the time, and the results (shown in as screenshots attached to this review) show the drive did in fact contain some bad sectors.
I ran a non-destructive write test using badblocks on Linux which, for each sector, will first read the sector and store it in memory, then write a random pattern, then read this pattern back and make sure it matches the pattern that was written, and finally restore the original contents of the sector. I had backups just in case, so I wasn't worried and was mainly doing this for science.
At the end, SMART output showed 2310 bad sectors existed on the drive. Since I waited 8 months to run this test and used the drive sparingly, it's unclear whether the sectors were always bad or if they developed over time. It also just so happens that none of the data I had stored on the drive were on these bad sectors. Despite the clear indication of potential failure, all sectors were restored to full working order after being written over. This means the sectors were really just held a weak magnetic charge, and were not permanently bad from e.g. physical damage to the platter.
As a result, the pending/offline uncorrectable sector counts were dropped to 0 and the reallocated sector count did not increase at all. If interested, I've included the entire SMART output below.

You can see there is an error count, but no pending/uncorrectable or reallocated sectors. Although it's clear that the drive is currently working, the history of weak sectors means I will keep a close eye on it in case data ends up being written to the sectors that used to be weak, since if they become weak again, the drive will have trouble reading from them and I could start to lose data as a result.

Get a WesternDigital Passport and save yourself the headache. I had one years ago, couldn't find it (hence this purchase) and it was great. I actually managed to find it again trying to dig out a USB key I could try and boot for their support (before realizing it was windows only) and you know what? Dusted the old 1TB WesternDigital and it boots up like a charm with backups from over 5 years ago.
When I received this drive I wanted to see how it compared to my other storage devices so I ran a 'CyrstalDiskMark' speed test (see photo).
As I understand, the 4K results are the most valued since this number represents random read/writes (typical of real life). The 4K numbers 'read/write' are the bottom number in the graph. I would surmise that the much larger 4TB Backup Plus would be preferred where size and weight isn't an issue and backup performance is foremost.
I carry this with me so size it the main criteria and it is superior to a memory stick in size and overall speed. If you get this drive I would suggest the AmazonBasics External Hard Drive Case which is a perfect travel companion for this device.
Hope this helps in your purchase evaluation
