After looking on Youtube how to open the chassis, I put in my own Samsung SSD 256 GB drive instead (forget the warranty...at this price you can get another one) I'm getting about 600 MB/s performance now. That's what should have happened when they were designing this from the beginning...
Seriously...who wants a thunderbolt disk drive that runs as slow as a 5400 RPM 2.5 inch drive ?
"Thank you for your patience. I am very sorry for the delay in our response to you. I checked with the RMA team, and unfortunately, the unit you returned had a different serial number than the unit we originally shipped to you. Additionally, the unit you returned to us had multiple scratches on it as well. Per our posted policies, we require items to be returned complete, without any damage to the item or packaging in order for the return to be accepted. Items which are returned damaged, incomplete, or that do not match the exact part number as originally shipped from our warehouse are refused. Unfortunately as you returned an item with a different serial number than the item we originally shipped you, and due to the damage, your return did not qualify for acceptance and has being refused back to you."
So maybe I typo'd the serial #, but I entered it RIGHT off the package. I removed the package, plugged it in, a few days later, put it back in the package, the same way, & sent it back. So, make your own determination if you want to have the same issue I did. They didn't offer ANY resolution. Won't work with them again. Now I'm stuck with a non working HD & I paid $200 bucks for it. Seagate says I have to work with the vendor for return.
I really didn't want it to do that. I just wanted to use it as extra storage for my mp3s and other media, so I could travel and play gigs, etc. I didn't want this to strictly be a time machine backup. I wish I could have afforded solid state, as it would have been faster, like the hard drive in my MacBook Pro, but so far so good. After the back up, I just turned off time machine. I'll back up manually what I want to back up. Besides, I do back up a lot of things to the iCloud and practically every program has ti's own cloud these days.
That one lasted until June 2013 and the same failure happened again. Same story. I did the online replacement and they sent me a new one and accepted the defective one.
So, now, with #3, it worked from June 2013 until this month (September 2013) and the same problem occurred again. Clearly there is a defect in the design somewhere. I called Seagate this time to express my frustration over this. They are sending me the Backup Plus drive (totally different family) with Thunderbolt adaptor. Let's hope this works out.
I would caution against this drive purely for the reliability issues I've listed above.
In the past when I have used Super Duper to copy a drive, I would have to let it run overnight when using a USB adapter. I used the thunderbolt adapter and was able to make a copy of over 300GB in under an hour.
Thought the kit is pretty expensive, the option of being able to buy additional drives and use it with the adapter make this a good long term investment.
I also bought another Seagate external drive but with the USB connector for the older Macbook that I have that did not have the Thunderbolt capability.
I would recommend this product if you value time. If not, the regular USB2/3/firewire is good. This is a plug and play device. No need to format for Macs. But then again, formatting is not hard to do.
