All of the Tripp adventure books - are notable for a skillful manipulation of mood, swaying between the fantastical and the realistic, the outlandish and the matter-of-fact, the serious and the playful, an assortment that seems of a piece with the authors satirical yet forgiving overview. They are also, despite their period and worldly settings, intellectually modern novels; reading them, one never loses the sense today's jolliness and insight beneath the historical furnishings.
In "Seamus Tripp & the Fire Opal Gate", Tripp continues his digging away at the past, and continues to be one of fiction's great treasure hunters. Seamus and his fellow travelers have immersed themselves in the texture and language of Australia in the mid to late 1800s. More than this, the authors have transformed Outback legend into a brilliant and colorful past, and created a distant myth and a warm tale. Packed with adventure, "Seamus Tripp & the Fire Opal Gate" contains pretty much everything you could ask of a farcical short story. It is an adjectival surprise.
