Search and Destroy: Inside the Campaign against Brett Kavanaugh Hardcover – September 3, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
In this deeply researched account, one of Washington’s top legal reporters reveals the massive funding, sophisticated organization, and fanatical zeal behind the campaign to stop Brett Kavanaugh’s appointment to the nation’s highest court.
Trump had promised to nominate only Scalia-style “originalists” to the Court—a promise he backed up with a list of potential nominees. The left took him at his word, setting up a titanic political clash when Justice Anthony Kennedy—the decisive vote on abortion—announced his retirement in June 2018.
The nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh—until that moment universally respected—sent Democratic senators racing to the cameras to announce their opposition, while an armada of activist groups, fueled by “dark money,” launched a coordinated public relations assault of unprecedented scope and fury.
Kavanaugh was nevertheless on the brink of confirmation when the Democrats, in desperation, disclosed an allegation of teenaged sexual assault against the stunned nominee, turning Christine Blasey Ford into a #MeToo icon.
Ryan Lovelace reports how Kavanaugh’s opponents, unable to produce a shred of corroboration, resorted to the court of public opinion, where the rules of evidence and standards of fairness favor the prosecution.
Under the skillful direction of a Clinton henchman and a savvy lawyer, they conducted a show trial in which the compliant media arrived at the desired verdict.
Kavanaugh owed his eventual confirmation to the pro-choice Republican senator Susan Collins, whose vote reflected her steel spine and commitment to fairness—“the allegations fail to meet the more-likely-than- not standard”—as well as her conclusion that Roe v. Wade was safe with him on the Court.
Lovelace concludes with a thought-provoking assessment of the unexpected consequences of the Kavanaugh controversy and of the cost to the judicial system of a search-and-destroy confirmation process.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2019I spent some time refreshing my mind about the history of the US Supreme Court including the Presidential nominations and confirmations. I was surprised to learn that FDR had a total of 8 and Ike had 5. We all realize the significance of these confirmations on the future of our country.
Before I purchased this book, I also read the background information on the author, Ryan Lovelace. He covered legal news in DC and previously worked as the Washington Examiner's Supreme Court Reporter. I was more than interested in the new details concerning Christine Blasey Ford's allegations and the attempt to derail the confirmation that would be presented in this new book. Were there in fact new details in this book? And, the answer is a resounding 'yes'.
The Clintons for some reason, seem to appear in so many of these books....There are several mentions of them in this text and also one with Chelsea in it. Hard for me to grasp the entire scope of their 'circle' but ii is certainly evident in this one. The 'Demand Justice' group and its ties are also addressed. I never had any idea about who might have been involved with this...Well, I do now.
The book contains information that I have never read before including more background on Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. She was Director of Corcept Therapeutics....and this portion of the book is indeed eye opening...I had no knowledge of this before and a class action lawsuit was also filed in March of 2019.
It is well-written and I believe a most honest presentation of the events leading up to the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh.
A true gavel to gavel experience with more, much more included. To paraphrase the author...the effect of controversy in judicial nomination process will be felt later and the younger generation is unsure about facing this type of situation. From my vantage point, I certainly can't blame them...it was like I was watching a circus unfold and I felt embarrassed to be 'peeking' in. I still feel that these hearings should have been held behind closed doors as was offered to the legal team for Dr. Ford.
Most highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2019Lovelace breaks news while taking readers on an in-depth look at the Kavanaugh confirmation process. The book reads quickly, while going into great detail about the players involved in the process. The book is an exciting look at a key moment in American history that won't be forgotten for years to come.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2019This book gives a very in depth coverage of Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings. The book is very thorough with hundreds of footnotes. It covers some different items then Justice on Trial.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2019This is just a book written by and for the far right . Sad but true. A book full of conspiracies to maintain division in this country. We need to rise above the partisanship and become one country again. Let us agree to disagree and live in peace once and for all.
