As a former resident of the town where this murder took place, I was delighted to find a book about this topic. While the author included a lot of information, the writing was so poor that it was a tough read. I'd recommend it only for the information it contains.

Interesting book in that it included many news articles (from all over the country) written at the time of the murder, investigation and trial. Learned details did not know before - though I have heard about this story all my life. Fun to read familiar names of people and places. Also sets the stage - somewhat - for what life was like in Readfield in 1905. Though can be dull reading because of so much repetition - that was the price for the author's attention to and sorting through details extracted from many newspaper articles. Reading this book is valuable to someone with interest in Readfield history and / or enjoys true unsolved mysteries!
Also learned (from the book) that my g-g grandfather was on the investigative jury. My Mom reminded me that our grandmother was on the Readfield Telephone switchboard the night Mattie Hackett was murdered. So the personal connection made it more interesting for me too. I was surprised to learn that (from all appearances) the author did not visit Readfield or interview any of the older residents. He mentioned the murder has faded from memory of Readfield people. Not true - some people who have lived in Readfield all their lives are still talking about the Mattie Hackett murder - and telling young people the story as well. The only modern picture was a "Google Earth" type picture of the location. No pictures of Mattie's gravestone - which I have seen at Readfield Corner Cemetery nor of the other locations mentioned as they look today. Did include poor quality pictures from old newspaper articles -mostly of the people involved. Bottom line - enjoyed the book and glad I read it! Thank you Mr. Spooner for diving into this story!
