Review
"This is one of the best books I have read if not the best..." - Dani, Touch My Spine Book Reviews.
"This fictional story is exceptionally well written, ominous, compelling, riveting, and portends the truth of what often happens to abducted young women. The same young women that we so often see in Newscasts, Internet, and in local newspapers..." - K D Dowdall, author of Garrett's Bones
"When I started reading this, I thought it was about a kidnapping or worse, murder. I soon found that this was headed in a direction I didn't anticipate. Anytime that happens in a crime thriller, it elevates the book for me. Naturally, you expect the usual tropes found in this genre just like any other, so when I'm actually surprised by a good twist, well, I count that as a great story. Special even." - Reads and Reels

I chose to read this book because of the premise that a woman was looking for her niece after her mysterious disappearance. The author does a great job describing the actions and emotions of the various characters, including the four that the main character, Autumn Brown, meets in Denver. But then about one-third into the book, there is a plot twist that changes the whole make-up of the book. Autumn starts becoming a Mary Sue who suddenly now is proficient with a gun in an obvious attempt at a plot device later in the book, presuming involving Autumn and a shootout. The reader is introduced to Autumn as a waitress of 20 years who spent the last three years just running to address her loss and suddenly obtains investigative skills by watch TV and now is a gun-toter. This became unrealistic and not what I invested my time to originally, which was a story of woman on her own outside of the purview of the cops looking for her niece just on her wits and determination alone. I would have thought that if the author was going to go down this road that Autumn would have spent those three years in grueling training to prepare for the seedy underworld that she knew the antagonist was involved in. But that would have been a totally different story. I had to stop reading the book half-way through because of the plot twist. Others may like the story and finish it off because the writing style is great. It's just not my personal cup of tea even though I was really initially excited about the book's premise.

This book really pulled me in, and the main character, Autumn, was such a strong personality. Stubborn but broken, and her determination to persist in finding her missing niece gave you this sense of hope and felt good to read. Especially on days when I didn't really feel persistent myself, it was great to read about another woman who fought to keep going everyday and wasn't going to let anything stop her from finding Maylee. And the new friends she makes when she moves to follow a lead are amazing characters. Not to spoil anything, I'll just say eventually you will come to like a few people you think you're gonna hate at first. Great book, great writing style, good pace, and not predictable. Highly recommend!!!

Search For Maylee by Didi Oviatt is a wonderfully written thriller that combines psychological suspense, action, character growth, and terror. Oviatt did a remarkable job of creating a narrative that is compelling, with the reader always wanting to know what is coming next. Oviatt builds the story, focusing in on the main character Autumn and her search for her missing niece, Maylee.
Oviatt creates a protagonist about whom the reader cares; we become invested in her struggle and her anguish as she continues looking for her missing niece, even as she is told there is nothing more to be done.
This tale is not only a riveting piece of story-telling, but also it deals with an important contemporary issue that is all too frequently over-looked—the abduction of young women and girls.
From Autumn’s inner emotional turmoil to her dedication and determination to find her niece, Oviatt takes us on a wild ride, one that will keep the reader turning the pages to find out what happens next.
I give this book 5 stars, and I recommend that anyone reading this review get a copy of this excellent book!

Quoting the author of Search for Maylee, “It’s a cold dark world we live in, and Autumn is about to find out just how cruel it can be. Strength and determination are on Autumn’s side and she will do whatever it takes.”
Autumn, no stranger to grief and lost, is inconsolable when Maylee, her much loved niece is abducted a month before her high school graduation. Autumn has not given up hope of finding her - alive. She believes and is frustrated by what she sees as the detective in charge of Maylee’s case doing next to nothing to find Maylee.
Finally, Autumn decides to take matters into her own hands and gathers a strength within herself to search for Maylee - by herself, alone. She even moves across the country to find the man that abducted Maylee and to get Maylee back from him.
This fictional story is exceptionally well written, ominous, compelling, riveting, and portends the truth of what often happens to abducted young women. The same young women that we so often see in Newscasts, Internet, and in local newspapers, with pleas from family and friends to help find their loved one.
These abductions often cross are visual paths, but then, it is as quickly forgotten. But, what we don’t know, is that it is much worse than we ever thought possible. I highly recommend this spell-binding story, Search for Maylee.

Search for Maylee was a tragic story, but a pleasant surprise all at the same time. I never wanted to leave Autumn's side as she struggled to get closer to her niece's where-a-bouts. The character is beautifully written and makes the reader look inside themselves to think about how they would react/act if put into similar scenarios. This author has a gift for storytelling. She had me on the edge of my seat, giggling, infuriated, etc.The story may not have been a happily-ever-after tale in every category, but I'm able to appreciate the beauty of her honest portrayal. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that there are some editing needs throughout, but the story made up for it. I'll be keeping an eye on this author in the future.

What mixed qualities

Firstly, I can't agree with the other review that it was "lighthearted ". I found it very difficult to read at times as I was thinking of all the poor victims of this horrendous crime.
The actual story and characters were excellent and easily deserved 5 stars but I just can't understand how an author with such obvious talent, can let their work be published without being proofread.
It was rare to read more than 2/3 pages without a typo, and sometimes there were at least 2 on a single page. There were simple mistakes such as site instead of sight, apostrophes missing then used in wrong places, and constant examples of past and present tense in the same sentence. One particular sentence just didn't make any sense atall to me.
I would have given the book 5 stars apart from all those errors, which really spoiled an otherwise very good story for me.

A First Class Crime Thriller
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 15, 2018Verified Purchase
"Search for Maylee" opens with the lead character Autumn, packing up her home in California and moving to Denver, Colorado to continue the search for her niece Maylee, who disappeared three years previously. Autumn is frustrated with the lack of police support and determines to find Maylee without their help.
In Denver, she befriends a great group of characters who support her in settling into her new environment. Autumn follows a new lead that increases the danger of her search, and takes the reader on an unexpected edge of the seat journey, to a heart stopping conclusion.
I read this book in one sitting, and congratulate the author on writing a first class crime thriller.

A girl has disappeared. Three years later, Autumn, tormented by her niece’s disappearance, sells her California home and heads to Colorado to follow her only lead on where she may have gone. Autumn’s search for Maylee begins and before long she becomes embroiled with lowlifes infesting the sick underworld of child abduction and abuse. Helped by various characters and police detectives, Autumn risks her life to find her niece while simultaneously becoming romantically involved.
The author writes in a highly descriptive style that emphasizes the emotions of the characters so that a reader can feel their pain/love/anger. Recommended for readers who like an intensely emotional drama that ends on an explosive note.
