This is the 4th book in a series, but able to be enjoyed as a standalone.
4.5 Stars.

Arilynn is a vegetarian, holistic, dog-fostering, yoga-teaching counselor who works with her college friends, Kennedy and Kate at a computer-matching service, Kinnections, in rural Verily, NY. her only remaining family is her grandfather--her parents died via lung cancer and suicide in the past ten years. Having witnessed her parents' illness, she has dedicated her life to living the healthiest life possible. She regularly encourages clean-living behaviors to the people she meets, and counsels, and can be a touch sanctimonious about it. Arilynn has just broken up with her secret lover of the past five years, Jacob, who is a holier-than-thou yogi with monogamy-averse ideas. (And good riddance!!!!)

Officer Stone Petty is a cop with an anger problem, sent to Arilynn's 6-week anger management program for counseling after a brutality incident. (He beat up a domestic abuser he caught beating the heck out of his wife and child.) As it turns out, Stone is extremely sensitive to domestic abuse as an abuse survivor. He's also a meat-loving, fast food choking, dog-hating recent ex-smoker, and totally wrong for Arilynn--so why are they attracted to each other?

This is low-conflict odd couple romance with lots of heart and some good heat. I really enjoyed the alternating POV, with the large swing in emotions. Stone has a lot of emotional scars, and he's quick to judge as a result. He is a big proponent of justice, and I liked his remorse regarding the incidents that led to his discipline. I think readers will find kinship with a man having a violent response to child/spousal abuse, even if he's a cop. Arilynn is a heroine with lofty ideals and down-to-earth solutions.

It is said that opposites attract. Stone and Arilyn do fit that mold. Arilyn is a vegetarian who is into clean living and eating. She is also into meditation and crystals along with her volunteer services to rescue lost and abused dogs. She dresses in long flowing skirts with her red hair hanging down her back and wears little to no makeup. She is not out to please anyone but herself. She has trust issues after finding her ex-boyfriend in a compromising position. He tried to convince her that man was just not made to be monogamous. She had forgiven him three times before but this was the last straw. She also was his dirty little secret as no one knew about them. He didn't take her on dates or introduce her to any friends or relatives and didn't want to meet any of hers.

Stone is a cop who recently transferred to Verily. He is the total opposite of Arilyn. He loves his beer, Big Mac's and pizza. He is also a smoker who is trying to quit. Stone also has deep anger management issues. Because of an incident that happened in his childhood he strongly hates dogs especially pit bulls. He has trust issues after walking in on his now ex-wife with his then best friend.

Arilyn conducts anger management classes using yoga as one of her tools. She and Stone had briefly met previously and they both developed a strong dislike for each other. After being the first cop to arrive on scene of a domestic abuse problem, Stone saw an inebriated man beating his wife and child. That caused Stone to lose it and he ended up beating the crap out of the guy. His police department ordered him to attend anger management classes held by Arilyn for six weeks.

This becomes the beginning of their rocky relationship.

I have to say I was looking forward to this book quite a bit because I really loved the previous book with Gen and Wolfe. And honestly that book really was a great set up for Arilyn and Stone, you could tell that the two of them had some serious chemistry going on between them, if only they could get past the fast that they seem to annoy each other by simply breathing. Needless to say I was totally looking forward to their story.

So Arilyn is coming out of a bad relationship when this book starts, and it's kind of a sad situation. I mean she had been with this guy for like ever, but never called him by name to his friend, and she never introduced him to anyone, she was basically a mistress except he wasn't married. I can't imagine what that would do to someone, being shoved aside and hidden like that. I really wanted her to find happiness with someone who wasn't afraid to put the two of them out there. You can tell early on in the book that she is really just a good person, and anyone who rescues dogs is good in my book (after all that's how I ended up with my six dogs). But that's not saying that she doesn't have traits that kind of annoy me, she's a little to hippie for me with the chakras and vegan agenda and crystals and all that. Sorry just not my thing. I could see how she would be slightly annoying, so when Stone shows up eating fried foods just to annoy her, I was all for it and laughed out loud. That being said, I still wanted good things for her.

I liked Stone. He's a bit of a hard a$$, and I get why. He sees a lot of hard things in his job as a cop, and after getting his backstory I can understand why domestic abuse calls, especially when children are involved, would be a trigger for him to have some serious anger issues.
