Ms. Avila's deeply moving personal story will engage you unlike anything you have probably read. It is an enthralling memoir of a small town Iowa girl who sets out after high school (circa 1968) determined to explore the big, wide, wonderful world and taste as much of life as she possibly can. It is a loving tribute to her amazing mother who bore and raised 11 children. It is a delicate introduction into the world of Feng Shui, with insightful information into the author's intimate exploration of science and God.
Germaine's willingness to let us into her personal journey should be applauded and treasured because her writing style is exceptional, tender, raw, revealing, fun loving, honest, frank and delightfully interesting. She will take you on a journey to 4 third world countries and allow you to see and understand the harsh realities she confronted and had to manage while raising two young daughters. Her deep love and respect for her husband and her commitment to her marriage vows are strongly evident thruout the book. It is with great respect and admiration that I submit this review on an outstanding read that I hope many people will find out about.
I would love to see this book turned into a movie. Oprah are you listening?!
An 18 year old Iowa farm girl with dreams and aspirations leaves home with all her worldly possessions in a paper bag; educates herself; works in the allure of Washington, D.C., Paris, and Switzerland; marries a handsome businessman and and should be living a charmed life, but... Life isn't a fairy tale. The hauntings of personal choices; the hauntings of those that we can't see; living in underdeveloped, superstitious, chauvinistic countries; fighting for her life and her children's lives; trying to understand and come to grips with it all. This is a fascinating life story of a charming child, young woman, and adult who faces challenges and unseen adversaries. She is finally able to understand and create peace for herself through a renewed devotion to Christianity with the disciplines of the metaphysical sciences. Germaine Parra Avila is a delightful, engaging, fascinating, and very instructive read. Don't miss this book!
