The first thing you'll notice when unboxing this power supply is the detail in the packaging. The power supply itself is wrapped in a velour bag. The modular cables come in a separate, 2 pocket pouch with Velcro flaps. There is a small instruction manual, a case badge and some cable ties as well as some really nice Velcro wire wraps with the Seasonic logo on them.
The next thing you'll notice is the fit and finish on the power supply. The steel case is powder coated a nice dark grey color, all of the plugs are solid feeling. I don't feel any play or wiggle when I plug any of the modular plugs in.
I'm running the supply in Hybrid fan control mode - this means the fan doesn't spin up at all until the supply hits 30% load - which happens rarely if ever for me. The fan runs in a silent mode (rated at 16 dBA) until it hits over 50% load - which I definitely haven't experienced yet, despite some heavy gaming.
The power coming out of the supply is clean and stable. Looking at my motherboard monitoring application (I'm using an Asrock board so it's A-Tuning) the voltages show very stable with nearly constant voltages with tiny, infrequent fluctuations, well within spec.
Before I buy a product, I like to read all of the negative reviews to get an idea of what people are saying the pain points are. I read through the reviews for this supply, and the only really valid sounding point I read was problems with the rigidity of the included modular cables, and difficulty plugging them in to the modular plugs on the supply, and/or components. I didn't find the cables to be overly rigid, and they plugged right into all of my components, and the modular plugs on the supply without any trouble. I've been at this a long time, so I might be more practiced than some other reviewers, or my supply might have rolled off the line after some tweaks, but based on the overwhelming number of positive customer reviews, and what I've seen from the reputable professional power supply reviewers, this is most likely not the case.
The only drawback I can mention for this supply (and it's one I gladly accept) is the lack of short cable kits for Seasonic supplies. You have to go 3rd party to get anything like that, and it's just a shame, but again, not a deal breaker at all - it just ensures I actually use the cool looking Velcro wire wraps!
There are only a few companies which make truly world-class power supplies with stable and accurate voltage (improves stability) and high-end components (allows power supply to operate at high temperatures and increases its life). A non-exhaustive list include:
- PC Power & Cooling (purchased by OCZ, which was purchased by Toshiba)
- Kingwin/Superflower (same company). These guys were the first to release an 80+ Platinum power supply and as of this review, have the best fanless model.
There are others, like Corsair, but their power supplies are made by Seasonic.
Enermax has a good reputation, but if you've followed their history, they are often problematic and even have odd compatibility problems. I'd avoid them when better brands are available.
This PSU is special in some ways:
- It isn't fanless, but the fan does not operate most of the time. When you start stressing your hardware (like a game), the fan kicks on, but stays so quiet that it sounds about as loud as a 5400RPM hard drive -- which is to say, very quiet.
- When the fan is not operating, the power supply is silent.
- Among the most stable voltage regulation of any power supply in existence.
- 80+ Platinum, so uses minimal wall power and generates minimal heat.
Seasonic's power supply is FULLY modular, including the connector to the motherboard. This makes the power supply somewhat more difficult to fit in small cases because the motherboard cable sticks out much farther from the power supply than it would without modular connectors.
Crocuta points out in a review comment that it may be possible to purchase a shorter motherboard modular cable for enclosures which can't efficiently handle longer cable lengths. While this is an unusual situation, those situations are the very reason enthusiasts purchase high-end units such as this one.
Performance is fantastic. I can't hear this thing. The cooling fans in my case, GPU and CPU are virtually silent, and with this PSU that makes the loudest thing on my machine is the sound of HDDs spinning! That's right, I can hear my HDDs spin and the heads clicking, something you don't hear much of from modern HDDs.
Even under load I don't hear this PSU rev up. Seasonic sets the bar for voltage regulation and this thing doesn't break a sweat even when overclocking my CPU and GPU. Did I mention there is a 7 year warranty?
If you're in the market for a no-compromise PSU, this (or it's higher powered brethren) are it.

Well just my luck, 10 months later, this PSU has died! It can no longer boot my system from a cold start. The only thing I've found to work is if I toggle the switch on the back off then on quickly, that can get the system to start sometimes.
I've started the RMA process with Seasonic, and I will see how it goes. I'm disappointed that this lasted less than a year, considering the price I paid. I may have just gotten really unlucky.
Apart from the reliability, everything else is great about this PSU. The modular cables are wonderful, and it's super quiet. I've never even had the fan go on in hybrid mode, on a i7-6700k with a GTX980Ti. Plenty of power for my machine. Until it stopped working, at least.
Update: Seasonic sent me a replacement which has been working fine so far. I had to send back the old one first though, which was pretty annoying.
My main draw to this power supply was the number of SATA devices this thing could power, it comes with 10 overall (2x 4 and 1x 2 cables).
This cable length was an initial concern for me but all the cables offer good lengths and should always be able to reach the destination with a little extra allowing proper cable management.
I use this power supply in my home server which has been on 24x7 since setting up and this power supply has stood up to the test so far. Would highly recommend.
Its half the wattage of my old PSU and I didn’t try to run my FX9590 (power hungry) and R9 295x2 (also power hungry) simultaneously. But it did the FX9590 which takes it near to its max continuous load without missing a beat. As it turns out I’m glad I bought it because the RMA of my 1200w ended up taking over 6 months.
It has now found a home in my brothers gaming build (4690k gtx970 h100igtx and noctua industrial ppc fans) for which it is pretty well suited.
Semi fanless and so quiet when the fan is on
Seasonic quality is the best I have found in the PSU market
Cables aren’t terrible, atx cable is braided and the rest are flat
Quite small from memory for a fully modular 660w
Can be installed any way up (unlike their fanless ones which have to be flat for convection)
Excellently packaged and presented
I don’t like:
Cables let the rest of the psu down –they aren’t bad but It’s too good for standard cables
Seasonic prices – unfortunately you get what you pay for
The best no compromise PSU for a smaller eco friendly mid/high end gaming rig. If you can splash out.
Works flawlessly, and I trust Seasonic to deliver super clean power to these components! Observation wise, I don't really know. But I have been using this for more than a year now with no issues!
