A very readable effort to explain to the often bewildered citizen that (a) climate change is caused by us - by burning fossils fuels with such abandon, (b) the need to wean ourselves off of fossil fuel-based sources of energy is urgent and (c) we have the means to do so but it is going to take some international cooperation that won't be easy. Kitcher is a very widely respected philosopher of science.

Renewable energy is now less expensive than fossil fuels. Electric vehicles are taking over the market. Low interest enables a change over. There is no longer a reason to use fossil fuels. And, incidentally, no reason for a very intrusive government program. Maybe a carbon tax or carbon trading.

Refreshingly readable book on global warming

Just picked up this fantastic book recently and I'm in the middle of it. It adds a sorely needed human element to all of the academic climate change books floating around out there that can tend towards the dry, slightly boring side. It charts an imaginary conversation between 2 people discussing climate change and global warming from differing perspectives. A scientific presentation of the facts it's not, but it does delve into some of it. It is more a book on why there seems to be so much confusion and disinformation about climate change in American society and how to address it through simply talking with others. Other reviewers of this book that want a fair and balanced reporting of global warming should be happy to know that the scientific community studying climate change is accurately represented here (+97%). The opinion of climate change denial is not represented - for that I'd suggest checking out mainstream news, especially Fox News.

A disappointing effort to be fair

The author(s) of this book ought to be embarrassed There is no attempt to be fair -- to explain why James Lovelock (of all people!) now considers "Green" ideology to be religious in nature, and why he thinks all the fuss over climate change may be "crazy" (in an interview in The Guardian, September 30, 2016); why so many scientists find the "hockey stick" graph so misleading that an entire book, entitled "A Disgrace to the Profession," was created out of their objections to Michael Mann; why the most eminent climate historian of the last 100 years, H.H. Lamb, thought that the influence of increased atmospheric carbon dioxide was "much smaller than the estimates which have commonly been accepted" ("Climatic History and the Future, " Princeton U. Press, p. 666); why the Holocene Climatic Optimum -- only a few thousand years ago, when CO2 levels were much lower than today's -- was warmer than the 21st century (see John L. Brooke, "Climate Change and the Course of Global History," Cambridge U. Press, p. 133). -- I could go on and on -- the author(s) can't even get the title right of Bjorn Lomborg's most important contribution to this topic: it's "Cool It," not "The Skeptical Environmentalist." -- Even a mass-market book such as "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Climate Change" contains more information than this sophomoric attempt at literary science. For anyone interested what skeptics really think, read "Global Warming: Alarmists, Skeptics, and Deniers," by Robinson and Robinson. The chief author taught the subject for decades.

Not really about environmental issues

It's really about forming a world government and redistributing wealth from first-world countries to third-world ones. I gave one star because the format was ingenious. But, otherwise, it was so disappointing; I felt duped, really... The argument was that the rich whites made the big carbon mess and, so, should pay. The fact that the poor browns may have made a bigger mess by uncontrolled population increases is barely acknowledged and never addressed. Like the carbon issue, everyone's known about the population issue for decades. It'd be great to have some clear talk and sensible action on these combined threats. But, as both are self-control issues, that will likely need much less than global government. Why DO people use too much or make too many kids? How can they, individuals, be inspired to better personal decisions? In my opinion, world government is not the answer.

Don't waste your time with this screed

The professors jump on the global warming doom bandwagon. The book is written as a dialog between an imaginary Joe and his imaginary girl friend Jo. The book could not be more one sided. The professors apparently don't know that there is another side, or else they have taken on the job of publicist for the global warming establishment. The book is filled with scientific errors.
