Why would a sane person attempt a tarpon book after Mill? Bill Horn shows why. This is a unique addition to the flats fishing & keys history/culture collection, better written than a "fishing book" but won't tie your brain in a mcguanian knot. This book lacks detailed casting instructions, fly recipes or a chart showing the guaranteed fly placement for the big 3. But it contains a wealth of information about the creatures living on or around the keys and subtly presented tips to help catch many of them. First timers will find this a great introduction to the place and the game, while veterans will laugh along with the stories and wonder at the same mysteries that Bill does. For $25 (or less) its a no brainer.

One of the best books I've read about flats fishing in the Florida Keys. Required reading for anyone dreaming about a "Grand Slam" in the Keys. And a Bonus.... interesting tidbits on Keys history. Along with some other classics, should be made a mandatory read before crossing into Monroe County, Florida .....

If you are looking for a book that tells you where, what flies and how to tie knots, this isn't it.
If you are looking for a book that paints a wonderful picture of the flats seasons around Marathon, this is it.
You will learn some things about migrations and tides and fishing while reading this well written
documentation of the seasons which is accompanied by the amazing sketches by artists Bob White.

Fishing the flats is on my bucket list. This is a great how to book written by someone who knows how to fish the flats.

I love these kinds of books - more narrative than how-to. The flats of the Florida Keys are Bill Horn's home waters, and he writes of them - their history, their present reality, and the big three fish species that anglers pursue there, bonefish, permit and tarpon - with the kind of love, insight and care other notable writers bring to a favorite trout river or stretch of surf. His writing brought back beautiful memories of my own brief, unguided, incredible encounter with fishing a small piece of this area. And it left me vowing to return.

I have fished with several of the guides mentioned in the book and in many of the locations described
by the writer.
