Seaworthy (Character Bleed Book 1) Kindle Edition
Jason Mirelli can’t play adrenaline-fueled action heroes forever. He’s getting older, plus the action star parts have grown a little thinner since he came out as bisexual. This role could finally let him be seen as a serious dramatic actor, and he needs it to go well -- for his career, and because he’s fallen in love with the story and the chance to tell it.
The first problem? He’ll be playing a ship’s captain ... and he hasn’t exactly mentioned his fear of water. The second problem? His co-star: award-winning, overly talkative, annoyingly adorable -- and openly gay – box office idol Colby Kent.
Colby’s always loved the novel this film’s based on, and he leapt at the chance to adapt it, now that he has the money and reputation to make it happen. But scars and secrets from his past make filming a love story difficult ... until Jason takes his hand and wakes up all his buried desires. Jason could be everything Colby’s ever wanted: generous and kind, a fantastic partner on set, not to mention those heroic muscles. But Colby just can’t take that chance ... or can he?
As their characters fall in love and fight a war, Colby and Jason find themselves falling, too ... and facing the return of their own past demons. But together they just might win ... and write their own love story.

Noone's writing is magical. It may not be for everyone, but wow, is it for me. I was swept up by emotion and imagery and loveliness and genuinely nice characters I rooted for all the way. The awkwardness is endearing and relatable to me, perhaps that's why I respond so positively to the story. Nah. It's just lovely no matter what. Two actors with immediate chemistry on the set but both insecure for different reasons and assuming the other is only acting...this is my jam. Sorry for all the cliches. They aren't in the book, I promise. Noone's romantic (okay, fine, sex) scenes are beautiful and tender and really thoughtful--which is what one of the characters desperately needs, and the other is his perfect puzzle piece (sorry, channeled a bit of her Featherbed Puzzle book there, equally lovely) and works hard to Get It and be there for this person who, he's learning, is the world to him. It's just...heartwarming and hopeful. I'm just going to continue my K.L. Noone journey now and embrace it all. Strong romantic tension and a lot of fun insights as to what it's like to work on a movie set make this addictive and engaging reading.
No cheating, HFN and a story that continues in at least two more books. I'm here for it.
Unfortunately, this is not the case with the first volume of Character Bleed, because the author just stopped. The 'book' is quite long, and there is a beginning and a middle, but after 358 pages, there is no proper end, no conclusion. Yes, the characters have sex of some sort, but since there is not much action or drama or anything else going on, it leaves the reader truly dissatisfied.
There are a lot of 5-star reviews, and I wonder if customers got used to this kind of thing, but its just mediocre and writing. Not sure if the author does not know how to construct a proper story, or if they just wrote, and wrote and wrote and after 1,000 pages hacked the manuscript into three parts without any consideration.
Most of what is written is internal anxiety. There is a great amount of redundant repetition, and a lot of 'large blue eyes' etc. etc. The characters are likeable, but too 'good' and seem strait from a Manga of some sort. There is not a lot of depth to the story.
I purchased the book for US$0.77 as Amazon often does, selling the first volume to lure you into a series, so I can't really complain. If I had paid more, I would be seriously miffed. Now I just feel that I have been cheated into a story that is not even a solid book. The next book cost proper money, especially converted into New Zealand Dollars, and in the moment I am too disappointed and angry to continue. Basically out of principle.
I wish, the author would have employed an editor. This could have been a much tighter read.
Ah well. 2.5 stars, making it three because I was entertained before I was left without an ending.
There is a story within the story in the making of the movie that brings the two characters together and that is fun to watch develop. These two men - the one damaged and wary, the other strong and compassionate - manage to see each other and find in each other a delight and appreciation regardless of their different backgrounds and circumstances that makes the development of their relationship gradual and believable. It is refreshing to see mature and clear communication being key but organic in their physical interactions. Can't wait for the next book!
One of my favorite things about this story is its us of magical realism. It's more than personification. Everything around Colby and Jason has life, choice, and intent.
"He muffled his astonished laugh in the towel. The towel collected the sound for him, a friend sharing the emotion."
“Just leave it anywhere. The chair. Is fine.” The chair did not seem to mind, so that was a consensus, then." (This is not a grammatical error. Punctuation is used to denote intonation, pacing, and rhythm where needed. It adds to the story rather than detracting from it. Both Jason and Colby can be awkward with each other, hence the halting speech.)
