Upon receiving this knife before I went to work today, I took a few minutes to open it and take a good look at it. This knife is everything that was written about it. I have used the utility knives that you can purchase at Lowe's, Home Depot, and Ace as well as Walmart and Dixon. Every single one of them were pieces of junk that only lasted a month and upon holding them for the first time out of the box, they all felt like weak aluminum box cutters. The worst thing about them were the guard flaps. They would loosen within a week, causing the blades to fall out while I was using the blade. That's to say nothing about the cuts I would get as a result.
Needless to say, I stopped using them and just bought a couple of pocket knives. After much trial and error with the $12 specials from Autozone and other like places, I just bought a Buck 110, outta boredome and never looked back. Afterall, a few laps on a strop everyday after work and it was razor sharp. The knife was durable, and it cut what I needed to cut like a samurai sword going through watermelons. Then recently after years of that, my boss took away the privilege of being able to use it at work and told me to use only box cutters. Obviously I was ready to strangle this person. But as this was due to some fool at work who indiscreetly abused said privilege, I had no choice but to understand and concede.
So after a couple days of searching the web for something sturdy, this knife came to my attention and now I'll never look back, I'm in love all over again. It was heavy and solid like my Buck, the blade guard is solid and bolted together, the ratcheting system is strong and ingenius . . . I would recommend no other utility knife in THE WORLD.
The reason I knocked a star off is for its practical use on my job. The time it takes for me to push the release lever forward, pull out the blade, pull the release lever back, and replace the blade within the handle is simply too long. If I were to actually try and use this at work, either my productivity would take a hit from the increased time per cut or I would run the risk of cutting myself by leaving the blade out.
If you want an extremely well constructed knife and are using it in a setting where time is not a factor, this is your knife. If you will be using it to make a lot of cuts during the day, I strongly suggest a retractable knife instead. I have not found one that matches the build quality of the Seber, but I have settled on the Milwaukee 48-22-1910 slide open utility knife for use at work.
You have to move the button to open the knife, then move it the other way to close it, kind of a pain, would be better to just have a spring loaded button that would allow you to move knife to where you want it and lock it there.
Locking at small angles is nice for cutting plastic pipe and stripping insulation off of large electrical cables.
