2010 release from the R&B veteran, his first in 16 years. Soulful, sleek and deeply romantic, Second Chance features the first single, "Lay With You" featuring Faith Evans. Second Chance tells El's story of redemption, which followed a period of personal turmoil for the immensely talented singer and songwriter. Co-executive produced by Ron Fair and Pete Farmer, Second Chance features collaborations with 50 Cent ("Format"), and Fabolous ("5 Seconds"). It also unites El DeBarge with some of music's most notable hitmakers, including co-writing and co-production by Babyface, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Mike City, Michael Angelo, Mischke, and the Avila Brothers.

Until NOW I realized that what R&B missed was a master who wasn't going to let these modern pop hags mess with his style. A genius who knows how to take the old style and make it contemporary. El Debarge, I've been, we've been, waiting for you!
Where you been??????
When I first saw the 5 star rating, I couldn't believe it really. I had to hear it for myself. I'm a tough cookie. There was no way in the world this is a 5 star R&B album but then maybe because this is however the same guy who brought us "I Like It-- I like it, I really, really, like it...." And remember Switch? So, if anyone had the chops to bring R&B back to an enjoyable genre then it would be El Debarge.
And then, I put my CD in and took my regular hour and a half commute to work in the morning--LA traffic. I was grooving from Lay With You all the way through Second Chance. And not just "grooving" but GROOV'IN. I felt this knot form in my heart and a couple of times a let out a loud shout of pure, unadulterated JOY because it's just been entirely TOO long since new R&B has made me feel this way.
You know how you buy some these people's albums today who are SUPPOSED to be singing R&B but they're not, they're singing POP, and the first song, merges into the second, and the third and by the 8th you're asking yourself, "was that just one long song?" But then, when the 9th song starts with a rendition of the same rhythm and beat and same old tone in the singers voice, and you realize that the entire album is a factory of the same old thing, monotonous and more proof that R&B is dead. Well, each song of Second Chance has it's distinct sound to the point where by the 13th track, you feel rejuvenated. I can't explain it but those who bought the album and are enjoying it know what I'm talking about. El's voice is un-intrusive. I think that's the best way to explain it. I had to make up a word for it!
If you like R&B and even Pop, then you have to get this CD because he's taking them SKOOL today... And it's been a LOOOONG time since I've been to class--and I LOVE IT!
His tell-tale voice is the same, nothing changed. His voice has endured. His voice is truly full of love and joy. You have no choice but to feel good while listening to this CD.
I am so happy for him and glad to see get his life back on track. Keep making music like this and I'll buy the it all up! You have reclaimed your spot on the throne. BUY THIS CD and you won't regret it! It's good til the last drop.
