We meet Mike, November's dad, in Until November, book 1 of the Until series. We peg him right away as a man who goes after what he wants, a man with a good heart and a lot of love for his family. And I for one was rooting for him to have his own story!
In Second Chance Holiday, Mike runs into Kat at the store, after not seeing her in ages. Their story is a fun, quick read. We get to meet Brandon (who, if we're lucky, we'll get to see more of!) & get to catch a glimpse of the Maysons & their families. And there are a couple surprises... *grin* I absolutely adore this series!!!
My only complaint - I want more! But, that is my complaint every time I finish an ARR book (and, interestingly, usually how I feel finishing a Kristen Ashely as well, so she's in great company)!! : )
This woman can write the phone book, and I think I would love it.
When we meet Mike Rouger in Until November we fell in love with this dad. I know what your thinking a dad, but this isn’t your ordinary dad.
His height of six feet on the dot would probably not be tall to most. His dark hair, which was always unruly, still looks the same-long enough that, if you happen to be standing nest to him, your hands itch to run your fingers through it. His naturally tan skin, which turns golden after a long summer, always makes his hazel eyes appear more emerald. The tattoos that now cover his arms and chest are something new, but they also tell their own story and change his classic good looks to something more rugged.
Why is it that the dads that I meet are nothing like this, in fact, I think they are the complete opposite of this description, making me wonder, where this guy lives, because, clearly I need to visit this town!
When he meets Kathleen Mullings in the hardware store he is a shocked to hear that she is back in town. Kat and Mike know each other from high school, and he seems taken aback.
“Do I know you?” I ask, watching as her cheeks darken even more as she looks around the hardware store. Cute, I think as I watch her look for an escape.
“Kat. Well, Kathleen Mullings.” She shrugs.
Well, shit. I look her over again, but this time I focus on her eyes-the same eyes I would look into when I was supposed to be studying. Instead, I was wondering what Kat would do if I ever kissed her. We never hung out with the same crowd, but back when we were in high school, I would look for excuses to hand out with her. After graduation, she went away to school and I stayed in Tennessee.
So now Kat is back in town freshly divorced with an unruly teenager in tow. So with nothing to lose Kat and Mike start a relationship. Well I’m not sure you can call it a relationship, they have sex.
Lots of sex, and lets be honest I would also. I would jump his bones every single chance I get. Twice a day if he wanted, but that’s me.
But Kat is done with this casual relationship, she wants something more, she deserves something more.
“I can’t do this anymore.” Okay. The words are out. I can breathe again.
“What do you mean you can’t do this anymore?” His eyes narrow further and drop to my hand as I pick up my bag.
“This thing between us…I can’t do it anymore” I shake my head, lifting my bag up and over my shoulder.
“This thing?” the words are growled and his eyes sweep the room.
I take a second to think about what I need to say before opening my mouth again. “You were honest with me and told me that you weren’t looking for a relationship.” I take a breath, feeling my heart speed up. “Nine months ago, I was okay with that because I felt the same way. I smile but feel it wobble. “I no longer feel that way. I want more.”
And just like that my heart is shattered. Broken. How could you not want something more? I want something more, and I’m not even Kat.
So Kat does the only thing she can think of, she goes on line dating. Oh dear, here goes nothing. But she wants Mike and no matter how many dates she goes on, she just can’t erase him from her heart. I mean it’s Mike, how can you erase greatness from your heart.
Imagine her surprise when on a date she ends up at none other than November's house for a family BBQ.
My stomach drops. No way. Fate cannot be this cruel. But the chance of another woman named November living in this town is about as likely as being struck by lightning. I’ve never met November, but Mike talked about her often, along with his granddaughter-he even brought up his son-in-law a few times, but I never put two and two together.
When I got to this part of the book, I swear I couldn’t read fast enough. With every turn of the page, I laughed and my heart started filling with more love than before. I mean come on, how much have you pissed off Karma that you end up at your exe's daughter's house for a family BBQ. Obviously a lot. Huge. Oh did I mention that at said BBQ we also see all the Mayson men. I know, freak out. It was so good to see them all back together again.
Now that Mike has cleared his head and decided that he and Kat are going to happen. We go on a very special love story. You see they still have the small or shall I save little road bump known as Brandon, Kat’s son. I shouldn’t say road bump, it’s more a hiccup.
Ladies meet the next alpha man star Brandon, he’s an 18 year old with chip on his shoulder bigger than the Grand Canyon. He is lashing out, with drinking and stupidity. Kat is beside herself and is at her wits end. Enter daddy Mike. He doesn’t want to tell her how to raise her son, but he can be there to give his opinion. I actually loved watching Mike nurture this young boy into become an amazing man.
So now that everyone is on the same page, it’ll be a piece of cake..NOT, that would be too easy for everyone. So what happens when the life you know changes-you can either give up or get that second chance that you know you both deserve!!!
Well done Ms. Reynolds, in a small story you have made me fall in love with more characters, and I for one am so happy that Mike finally got his chance to tell his story. But now my question is when are you going to give us more Brandon? I mean with a family guiding him like the Mayson men, he is a mini Alpha in training!
Once Christmas book but not enough Christmas to choke on and I really enjoyed was
Second Chance Holiday, Aurora Rose Reynolds
This super sweet and sexy Christmas novella features a older hero/heroine in their forties. Mike the hero is 47 and the heroine Kathleen is 43. If you have read the Until series then you have met Mike before and know he is part responsible owner of a strip club and recently found his daughter who was taken from him by her mother, so he has some serious trust issues with women. Kathleen is coming off a scummy divorce and has her own trust issues as well. She also does not want to expose her son to a men parade, even though there is just fantastic alpha Mike.
This small town romance follows the two as they break up after two years of hiding the relationship they have with each other and Mike goes all alpha male to get his woman back. It is the holidays so he does have to deal with tree buying and commentary from the family which makes for good reading.
I enjoyed this and I can see myself pulling this one out next Christmas, like I would watch my favorite Christmas movie. It was short, cute and I enjoyed the history the two had we each other, it was like reading a Hallmark movie but way more hot, which I liked.
Straight to the Swagger: If you are the type who never puts up a tree to the type who decks all the halls. This book has less than to more than enough Christmas to say you checked into the season.
