I found most all of the characters annoying, but Karissa was the one that stood out for me the most. The reasons for her gun-shy nature when it came to relationships didn't come off as realistic. I also felt that she was a bit too whiny, constantly doubting herself and her attractiveness, all because he ex cheated on her. She was weepy, not angry, and it didn't resonate well with me.
Marsh was a bit too pushy for my tastes, especially since the ink on the divorce was barely dry! He never gave Karissa time to be on her own, figure out who she was now without being in a relationship. He seemed to enjoy Karissa's use of him to needle her ex, and it made the relationship feel unrealistic.
All things considered, I thought this was a good introduction to the author's writing style, but it wasn't a good fit for me as a reader. I do believe I have another book written by this author, so I am willing to give her a second chance, but not right away. I hope the next one is a better fit for me!
Then she has to move in with her parents because she needs help (I wonder where child support was?) The mother has just developed lupus and her father is 60. They are still running the family's dairy farm. So, a friend since childhood stops by to help them with the animals, repairing the fence, etc. and she acts like he raped her at 6 and she hates him. Good grief this gal is so full of herself. Any guest in her parents home is no concern of hers except to be polite. if she doesn't like him stopping by, she can move. But she is a total *itch to him every chance she gets. Oh she knows she is out of bounds but she does it anyway.
This guy is Marsh, the hero of the story. He has been crazy about her since childhood and he still cares about her so he is just careful around her. He stops in the snow to change the tire on her truck and she slams him and tears off like a 13 year old just learning to drive. I thought this story had the potential to be a really good second chance read. I really liked Marsh. He made for a good hero. Why he took all the crap off of her he did is beyond me. I really wanted better for him. I did quit reading. I just kept getting more and more annoyed with the heroine. I don't like to read a story that has me hating the main characters and that is about all this heroine inspired.
The dad had the son for the week-end which he insisted on. The kid gets sick and he blames the mother. Of course, the meals he feeds the kid comes from MacDonald's, etc. But he takes no responsibility for any of it and Praise be, a 5 year old gets sick. Must have been the first time in history that occurs. Kids get sick, fact of life. Yet she lets him berate her over the kid being sick when he was fine when he left her care. This was just too much for me. Now, if she had landed on him with all 4s, I would have had a lot more respect for her. Oh but yes, it was all her fault that HE CHEATED., Oh, I wouldn't have worn that hair shirt! I just couldn't take it. i had to give up. I found by reading some of the other reviews that those readers had the same problem I did. This heroine needed somebody to take her behind the wood shed and give her what for!!!
I was not paid for this review. I am not an author nor do I know one. I am not kin to this writer. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 1/12/18
Clean romance, substance abuse mentioned and part of the conflict. I recommend this book.
Marsh has had a crush on Karissa throughout high school. Unfortunately, he is her brother's best friend & a couple of years older. By the time he felt he could ask her out without her dad coming at him with a shotgun, she was dating the man that now is her ex. This time, he's not going to let anything stand I. His way.
I really enjoyed the start to this series. Heather Tullis developed complex characters that are realistic & well rounded. With Karissa, the writer allowed the reader the intimacy of knowing what was going on in her mind & how her husband cheating & the divorce really affected her heart, her mind & her ability to trust. With Marsh, his lack of patience about cost him everything. The plot moved quickly but had several twists that could have derailed their relationship. I can't wait to see how the series progresses!
Karissa always knew what her life would be like…love, marriage, children and a HEA until her husband does the ultimate…demand a divorce and gets another woman pregnant! ! Her life is in shambles and she decides to move back home and begin again only…no man will ever claim her heart again...or so she believes…
Marshal has always had a crush on Karissa but things happened and they never got the chance to date…now she is back in town all grown up and has a child and he is determined to be a part of her ever after…that is until he is accused of giving his students drugs.
Can Marshal show Karissa that she can trust him while his reputation and life is on the line or will she just turn her back on him and move on to a lonely life???
