#1 The strongest steel
To say that I am now kicking my own butt would be an understatement... I had this little gem on my to-be-read pile for years... years I tell ya!!!! why oh why it took me this long to finally pick it up?!?!?!?!?! oh, the mysteries of life :) as you can probably guess from this overly dramatic reaction right at the beginning of my review, I absolutely loved it :) so much so that I already read the sequel AND started book #3 in this series ;) but worry not, it works perfectly well as a standalone, although I can guarantee that you will want to read the sequels as soon as possible, because you will be very curious to read more about the rest of the people from the tatoo studio Second Circle :) so without any further ado, let's get into all the good stuff why you need to read this gem ASAP if you haven't yet :)
This is a story about Harper and Trent :) something horrible happened to Harper a few years ago that not only left scars visible to the eye on her back, but also a lot more not so visible inside of her... but it's the first ones that led her to Trent's tattoo studio one night... because he sort of specializes in tattooing on scars and such... and that's when everything starts to change... :) I had some small, really miniscule issues along the way, but it definitely did not take away from my overall enjoyment of reading this gem, that's why I decided to rate it full five stars... especially since it was connected to some of the decisions our main characters made along the way... decisions that I sort of understood at the moment and that were resolved in a very satisfying way at the end, so instead of focusing on them, especially because of my no spoilers rule I cannot get more into, let's focus on all the reasons why I adored this novel... where to start? :)
Harper is exactly the type of heroines I love to read about... one that goes through a pretty spectacular character development arch throughout the book :) she starts as a very guarded person, which is absolutely understandable based on what happened to her... she's easily scared and can't really stand the touch of other people... to see how she slowly grows stronger and braver, opening herself up to others... :) this type of heroine is my favourite to read about... they don't have to be super strong and know everything right at the very beginning, but all my favourite ones, even at the start, have that spark inside of them... that little something more, that with time will burn brighter and brighter... *sighs happily* :) then we have Trent... going into this book I expected him to be this tough, alpha type man, and don't get me wrong, he's like that... :) you know, tall, with lots of tattoos and that dangerous aura... but what I did not expect is for him to be so.... kind, sweet and just swoonworthy :) they way he treats Harper from the start, how understanding and patient he is with her, how he encourages her to make steps to get better... their slow burn romance was wonderful to read :) they had incredible chemistry together and their banter was great :)
Not only we have a great main couple in this story, we have several phenomenal secondary characters as well :) they are the main reason why I am so sure that you will quickly become addicted to this series and want to read more about them immidietaly after finishing this first novel :) but worry not, the one about Cujo (Trent's best friend and co-owner of the tattoo studio) and Drea (Harper's best friend) is next in line, with Pixie (the receptionist in the studio) and a droolworthy rock star next and Lia (another tattoo artist) being the heroine of the last book in the series... :) all of them are such interesting characters, diverse and flawed, but the same can be said about the couple in this story... and it's all thanks to the absolutely phenomenal writing style of Scarlett Cole... I swear, that woman mesmerized me from that very first chapter and I was unable to pull myself away from this story for a longer time :) the best proof of how much I adored it, is the fact, like I mentioned before, that I already started book #3 in this series :) I hope I did a good job of encouraging you guys to pick up this book because you all need to read it :)
#2 The fractured heart
This is the second book in Second Circle tattoo series of contemporary romances but worry not if you are not caught up on the previous one, don't remember the details or just not interested in reading it, so far all the books I read in this series work perfectly well as standalones, so you can start with this one if you feel like it :) yes, you will get more background about the main couple from this story, because we met them both in that first novel, but you get all the necessary informations in here, so again, it's totally up to you about the order of reading :) I fell in love with this series after inhaling "The strongest steel" which is the first book :) after finishing that one I immediately picked up this sequel... if we're being totally honest, I did it so fast mostly because I was more curious about the third book but wanted to read those stories in order, but to my surprise, I really enjoyed the story about Drea and Cujo :) let me tell you more about why is that ;)
I'm gonna start with Brody... yeah, his nickname is Cujo and most people call him that... and by the way, the story behind it is quite hilarious, but I won't spoil you here ;) I will keep calling him by his name though, because that's what Drea does and I really like it, I think it suits him really well :) if you decide to do read that first book, you will get to know them like I did... you will see how he and Drea had this sarcastic banter from the start like they sort of don't like each other, but we all know there's more to that interactions, sizzling underneath all the "insults" ;) you will also mistakenly assume, like I did, that you have both of them pretty much figured out... and yeah, that is soooo not the truth about the situation... because in this installment we get to see much more about them and learn details about both of them... Drea is working two jobs, barely scraping by, taking care of her terminally sick mother... it's a very hard situation, demanding a lot from Drea and it shows... she's constantly in a hurry, tired and exhausted, her live revolving around everyone and everything but herself... she's definitely not interested in a relationship of any sorts, especially with Brody, who she sees as this carefree guy who doesn't take anything and anyone seriously... little does she know, he has a history of his own... his mother left them when he was very young, and he and his brothers were raised by their dad... he takes great care of his family and works very hard as co-owner of businesses, one with his brother and one, the Second Circle tattoo studio, with his best friend Trent :)
Going into this story I did not expect to like them as much as I did in the end... mostly, because I made some assumptions that did not come true at all... :) both of them surprised me with the depths of their characters... and yes, both of them made some decisions I did not agree with at the moment, but I understood where they were coming from... I can't be more specific because it happened closer to the end of the story and would involve spoilers about some stuff, but yeah... their romance was another thing that unfolded in a different way that I expected it to... I knew they have this sparkling chemistry, this push-and-pull sort of situation that I just knew would explode at some point... what I did not expect is how it will evolve after that initial explosion... :) because a similar thing happened as in that first book... two adults actually talked with each other like grown ups... they acknowledged the very hard and complex situation they are in and just... explained things between them :) yes, sure, they both made some mistakes along the way, but it all happened in a realistic way and not in that really annoying I-will-not-talk-with-you-for-months way that always make me hate books... ;) also, what I adored in this book, is that Drea at one point talks about starting therapy to help her deal with the issues with her life and I applaud that soooo much... and it's mentioned like a totally normal thing, which it is, but it's still not that common in books and I loved it here :)
Besides the romance part of the story we also have the more mysterious aspect... at the very begining of the story Drea is a witness to a crime that happens at the coffee shop she works at... the whole situation turns out to be much more complex and dangerous that we think at the beginning, but we uncover all parts of it throughout the whole story so I don't want to get into any more details here... the whole thing is an interesting addition and allows for some definitely dramatic turns of events... but what I feel this book is most about, is family... the one you are related to by blood, and the one you choose for yourself... how friends, true friends, can lift you up and help you when you struggle... how there is kindness in people and how can they surprise you when you don't expect it... I loved certain scenes where they helped Drea... and I know I'm being vague, but I don't want to ruin the surprise and the lovely impact that scene will have on you :) just like with the first book, I adored the relationship between our main couple, as well as all the secondary characters... because once again we have the whole gang from the tattoo studio present here ;) with a few interesting additions ;) now I am even more curious than I was before to get into book #3 which is all about Pixie, the receptionist in the Second Circle and a totally swoonworthy / panty-melting rock star... *fans herself* fingers crossed it's as good as I am hoping it will be, cause my expectations are high ;) in the meantime, I highly encourage you guys to pick up this book, and this whole series in general, just be warned... you might get as addicted to this grup of friends as I did, and in that case you need time to devour all the books ;)
#3 The purest hook
This is the third book in a series, but just like with the previous two, it works perfectly well as a standalone :) each story so far focuses on a different couple, and even though main characters from other novels appear as secondary characters in each of them, you get all the necessary informations to enjoy each book in it ;) this particular installment was yet another perfect example of why I love Scarlett Cole so much and why she so quickly rises on my list of favourite authors :) let me explain in more details ;)
With each story in this series I read so far I fell in love with the main characters… it wasn’t always the case of love from the very first chapter, but by the end of each book I was head over heels in love with both of them… and that’s all because of the amazing ability of Scarlett Cole to create wonderfully complex and flawed people… *sighs happily* and she did it yet again in this book… let’s start with Pixie, our heroine :) we saw her in previous books cause she works as a receptionist / office manager in the Second Circle tattoo studio which is co-owned by the heroes of the first two books… there were glimpses into her past in those stories, but I won’t spoil you anything here in case this will be your first dive into this series :) but it’s bad and it’s gonna be hard to read, that I can warn you about… I am definitely giving you trigger warnings about abuse and addiction… it’s just something to keep in mind while making decision if you want to read this book… so back to Pixie… she had a pretty horrible past that she escaped from, and now she’s making the best she can with her new family :) enter Dred, the lead singer and songwriter for the metal band Preload… *sighs* give me a minute to compose myself ;) they flirt for a while but Pixie is reluctant to start anything more serious with him, for very valid reasons… nevertheless, their sizzling chemistry wins in the end and things start to get interesting… ;)
I have so many great things to say about this book so I will just mention all of them in a totally random order :) the writing style was once again very entertaining and every time I thought I knew where we’re going, it took some sort of surprising turn I did not expect… the story kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to read chapter after chapter to see how everything will end… ;) all the yeses to mentioning therapy in this book… Dred and all his bandmates met and spent a lot of time in a group home, and they all have some demons to battle and I loved how many times therapy was mentioned as a way to help them with their issues… obviously the biggest focus was on Dred and Pixie, and I loved how Scarlett portrayed their fight to get better… mentioning therapy and how Pixie battled her addiction… oh, and another great thing were the sex scenes… and I am mentioning them because of Pixie’s past… not going into details, she has some serious hang ups, but I adored how they worked together to overcome them, talking honestly and yeah, making mistakes along the way, but it felt so raw and real… similar thing can be said about how they handled conflict and arguments between them… it takes time for them to build enough trust to share details of their pasts, and even after that there are situations where both of them could have reacted better… but what I love is how they act after those moments… they talk and tackle those issues head on and together :) and that makes my heart so happy :) the last thing I want to mention are the band members… we get a little bit more informations about them in this book and all those little snippets only made me more curious about their own stories… fortunately for me, all of them are already available to buy and read… and if you think I am taking any sort of longer break before I finish this series and then jump straight into the one about the band, well… you’re wrong ;) I am gonna read something lighter because this was a very emotional book, but very soon I am jumping back to the last story about Lia this time, another tattoo artist in the studio and someone we may or may not have heard about already… but that’s all I am saying here, after all I don’t want to spoil anything for you ;) I can highly and wholeheartedly recommend you guys this book and this series in general and I hope that if you haven’t picked it up yet, I convinced you to give it a try :)
#4 The darkest link
This book was yet another perfect example of how you can write a romance without stupid and unnecessary drama between the main couple… just two adults falling for one another and dealing with all the shit that life throws at them :) I am now expecting that from every single Scarlett Cole’s book ;) this is the fourth and final installment in the Second Circle Tattoo series and even though technically it can be read as a standalone, because you get all the necessary info about our main couple in it, I highly recommend you to read the previous ones before diving into it :) they are all absolutely amazing and you will have soooo much backstory about some wonderful people who appear here as secondary characters :) I loved Lia before, and getting to know more about her in this novel was fabulous :) she’s a complex person who had to deal with a lot of stuff in her life… and by the way, giant yay for mentioning therapy so many times and how it helped her :) the same goes for Reid… he has a dark past and is doing his best to atone for certain mistakes… these two together are just… *sighs happily* :) once again, I have troubles putting all my thoughts into words, because I loved this story to pieces… Lia and Reid fell pretty quickly for one another and yet Scarlett Cole wrote them in a way that I absolutely believed that… a lot of things were happening around them, but they dealt with them together, you know… like adults… talking and communicating :) it’s definitely a very emotional read but I highly recommend you to add it on your tbr piles :)
I only heard about this book a few days ago from a friend who'd purchased it. As soon as she told me about, I immediately got it and started reading it. I'm always cautious about reading novels from authors that I haven't read anything from before, but I was pleasantly surprised with this one. It hooked me from the very first chapter and kept my interest right until the very end. And God, Trent was to die for. He was the perfect blend of bad boy and sweetheart. They way he took care of Harper completely undid me. I will definitely be reading future work from Scarlett.
The Fractured Heart Review:
I only discovered the incredible talent of this author two months ago when I read her debut novel, The Strongest Steel. That story sucked me in so deeply that I literally sat down and read it in one sitting, which is something I rarely do. To say the least, I was very anxious to read the second book in The Second Circle Tattoo series.
When I noticed The Fractured Heart on Net Galley, I immediately requested a free ARC and rather quickly was approved and had started reading it.
Sometimes when I read debut novels, I find myself being extremely disappointed with later instalments in the series, but that absolutely DID NOT happen with this one. Once again Scarlett grabbed my attention from the start and kept it throughout the story, and still had it right until the very end.
As much as I fell in love with Trent and Harper’s story, I have to say that I adored this one a million times more.
Cujo appears to be this big badass tattooed guy, who enjoys casual hook-ups and avoids relationships like the plague. All because of his abandonment issues caused by his mother leaving him and his two brothers when they were small children. He’s blamed himself for years, thinking that he was the reason his mother left. Deep down he wants the kind of relationship his best friend has with his fiancé, but his fear that he’s not good enough keeps him from having one.
Drea portrays this hard-as-nails, don’t mess with me kind of attitude. Little does everyone know that she’s about to break. She’s struggling with living from day to day. She works two jobs trying to keep from drowning in debt, all the while take care of her very ill mother.
The pair reluctantly agrees to work together to plan an engagement party for their best friends. I loved their banter! At first they started off with funny insults, which turned to teasing, and then changed to some serious flirting with one another. The sexual tension between these two was OFF THE CHARTS! They obviously both want each other badly, but they keep fighting the attraction they both share.
When Drea witnesses a woman getting kidnapped from the café where she works, she becomes obsessed with finding out what happened to her. And Someone from Cujo’s past makes a reappearance in his life and he’s not quite sure how to deal with it. They both find support with one another and quickly things start heating up between the pair, and OMG it is freaking spectacular!
All-in-all, this story has the perfect combination of hot sex, humour, suspense, and most importantly LOVE.
Scarlett is definitely one of my favourite authors of 2015! Can’t wait to read more of her work.
The Purest Hook Review:
I'm a HUGE fan of Scarlett's work and each time she has released a new book I thought to myself, "There's no way she can top this one because that was effin' brilliant." But boy was I wrong!
The Purest Hook completely wrecked me! In a fantastic way, of course. So many emotions flowed through me during each of my reading sessions. One minute I'd be laughing because of something ridiculous that Dred, Trent, or Cujo said. The next I would be crying because of something tragic that happened in the past, or happy tears because of a beautiful moment that transpired between Dred and Pixie. And on several occasions, my voice of reason talked me down from throwing my brand new Kindle at the wall. Not to mention all the sexy times, Holy God, Dred's REALLY good at sexy times! Sweet times too.
In my personal opinion, The Purest Hook has surpassed the previous books in the Second Circle Tattoos Series. It is hands down her best work to-date! I look forward to many years and many more books from this amazingly talented author.
The Darkest Link Review:
I'm just gonna put this out there first thing because I feel it has to be said...BEST. SHOWER. SCENE. EVER!!! No joke. It was deliciously hot and steamy, and not because of the temperature of the water. Know what I'm sayin'?
As with all of Scarlett's other books, I absolutely fell in love with the storyline and her characters. Lia is sexy, spunky, confident, has a unique style, and I adored her sense of humour. And Reid, where do I even begin with this guy? He rides a motorcycle, knows how to work with his hands, volunteers with youth in his neighbourhood (sigh), falls in love with Lia fast and hard, and holy heck, I do believe he was the most dominant in the bedroom out of ALL the men. He was quite bossy and I have to admit...it was FABULOUS!
And I smiled every time we got to see a glimpse of Harper, Trent, Drea, Cujo, Pixie, Petal, and Dred. I've missed them so. I think I feel a reread coming on.
A great conclusion to a seriously fantastic series! I am a bit sad to see the end of the The Second Circle Tattoos' gang and their significant others.
Thankfully, Scarlett has two more series planned for the future and she's writing her little butt off to get those out to us.
Strong storylines, sometimes painful, downright of the charts sexy, angst, and so much love... All four books deserve much higher than 5 stars. See if you can put them down!
Scarlett Cole is an author to watch. I will be following her future books with anticipation and downloading her current ones not yet read ASAP. Thank you so much Scarlett!
