Just a few pages from the end I thought I knew what was going to happen, then as it unfolded I burst into tears and cried out. That is so unlike me, but Lauraine Snelling had me completely enthralled. This story of grandparents parenting grandchildren at the same time dealing with a career, retirement, depression was so close to my own heart. I found this book to be so realistic because I see so many grandparents that are having to raise their grandchildren. Ken and Mona are eager to begin their retirement years and enjoy more leisure time but plans change unexpectedly and instead they are faced with increased responsibilities. The challenges they face and the family relationships seemed so real, that I felt like they were people I might know. Issues of adjusted expectations as well as many of the fears of the children were dealt with in a very realistic way - - except that the answers were almost too perfect sometimes, but that is why it is fiction and not Life! I really loved the way that relying on faith in God and praying for their needs was so important to the characters in the book. Highly recommend this book, probably it resonates more with older readers who identify with the grandparents in the story.

I would have liked one more chapter to let us know where Steig and his children settled, did Mona and Ken get to travel??? I know it was written years ago, but a sequel would be great!

I love Lauraine Snelling's books, and this one did not disappoint! The story is well told with characters that bring the book alive.
The story is about grandparents who have to raise their grandchildren while their son goes away for an army misssion. The grandfather is retiring, while the grandmother is building her business. They did not plan on raising children again, so their plans must be rearranged, as life doesn't always go as planned!
The grandchildren are having a hard time with their own issues, so that brings more issues that the grandparents have to learn to deal with solving.
I like how this story helps us to see that even though we make plans, God may have other plans that we just have to trust will work out according to his will. God will carry us through like he does for this family!
I highly recommend this book!

I choose this rating because the book started off slow. I had trouble continuing at 1st, but as I continued to read it got way better! Missing son, a mother troubled with depression, kids missing there dad and beginning to think their dad was dead. There's this build up and you can't put the book down. Great book for Christians looking for a Christ centered book!
