Superb book, moving and haunting. a watershed. What is most impressive in this exquisite volume is the translator's unerring grasp of the French. So deeply does Hoyt Rogers understand every nuance of Bonnefoy's poetry and language that he is able to render its many levels of meaning while remaining absolutely faithful to the task of poetry. So many translators, misguided and deaf, give a sort of pale shadow of the original work. Not so in this book! Here, the English poems actually do justice to the French and allow the reader to experience Bonnefoy's unique stature. (One is reminded of Baudelaire's translations of Poe. By a soul-mate, a brother -- a poet of equal stature).

Yves Bonnefoy is recognized as one of the greatest of French poets. This French/English bi-lingual presentation of his recent compositions makes his work wonderfully available to English-language readers with little or no skill in French. If they like his style--which differs from and is often more subtle than much of American poetry--readers will find his writings herein to be interesting, perhaps even fascinating.

Magnificent! Having been introduced to Yves Bonnefoy's poetry online, I had to buy a book of his work. I discovered Second Simplicity to be an excellent review of Bonnefoy's recent work, I greatly appreciated getting a contemporary French view of modern poetry. Thank you! Merci beaucoup.

Bonnefoy is a brilliant poet, as always.

I do not like the translations, though, which depart
too far from the original. Of course, translation of
poetry, especially such refined, language-dependent
poetry as Bonnefoy's, is impossible.
