Cate Dean's books go down like a refreshing, sweet, cool drink on a warm spring day. I'd read most of them, at the point I was offered the ARC of this prequel to a new series, and have enjoyed them all. _Second Son_ gave me something new in the way of a viewpoint character: a young man (Micah) who is the "spare heir" to a dukedom, with an older brother (Liam) who seems to have it all together -- which leaves Micah in the position of being able to pursue his passion, inventing, and new potential love interest, Raine, in relative peace. That is, until things start to go sideways. As problems escalate and serious danger threatens, Micah begins his journey from cosseted young adult to manhood in a time of growing peril, both personal and throughout his land. This new adult fantasy series holds all of the charm and intrigue of Cate Dean's other work, so is highly recommended. Enjoy!

Fast believable action. The mother could use a little more depth. You don't know if she is supportive of her stepson rule or plotting to stubborn him and put her son in his place as ruler. Story was a little too short to flesh out the peripheral characters but could. Be remedied in the follow on.good beginning.

Micah is a smart and inventive young man whose older brother is the prospective ruler. He gets into trouble but also gets out of trouble with his MacGyver-like qualities. This was a really good prequel. I look forward to reading more by this author. Recommended

I couldn't put the book down. You enter the world of two brothers Micah and Liam. Two brothers who actually get along. Liam is in line to take over as Duke, and Micah supports him the entire way. In most historical books the brothers are at each other's throat trying to plot and plan on how to get the title and money. The book is a bit of mystery with danger and family drama. Now that I have finished this story I have to read more! I don't know how Cate Dean does it but she has a way of sucking you into another world where you feel as if you are there going through it all with characters. She always manages to create a character that you can immediately relate to and fall in love with. Then when it's time to leave that world you can't wait to go back in with the next book. For those who don't have a lot of time this book is well written and not too long.

When I was given an opportunity to read the ARC I thought why not. Since I never read any of her work I didn't know what to expect. I was blown away! Ms Deans characters are well thought out and come with secrets of their own, which I hope will be answered in the first book Shattered Throne. It was a "page turner" which kept you engrossed in the book. And believe me she packed a lot of story in 60 pages. At 99 cents it's a bargain! Read this prequel, you'll be glad you did!

I was looking for something new to read and am so glad I read Second Son. I was drawn in from beginning to end, and can't wait for the next one. The world is interesting and the characters are great. I now have some new friends. Cate Dean brings them to life. Micah is enjoyable to be around with his experiments and intelligence. I now have a new series to read and since this is the first book I have read by Cate Dean, I will need to check out the rest of her works.

I love classic fantasy and Cate Dean does an amazing job crafting the fantasy, Second Son. This novella will leave you wanting more. I can't wait to read the next book in the series and find out what happens with Micah, Liam, Raine, and Kres. BTW, I want a fire drake of my very own!
