About the Author
Ellison Blackburn is the author of now several mindful, soft science-fiction novels. Despite earning degrees in both Biology and English Literature, for many years, she traveled a career path unrelated to either field of study. It was not until she authored her first science-fiction book did her education and work background mingle sensibly. In addition to storytelling and scribbling poetry, Ellison enjoys abstract painting, international travel, watching foreign films and adapted movies, as well as reading novels and tales of mystery and suspense.

The plot of "Second Son" is highly reminiscent of many a paranormal romance: Grey and Mallory are still in love, but forbidden by his divine duties to consummate their relationship. Meanwhile, Mallory has other suitors, and she must choose between a non-physical love for her no-longer-human lover, or the possibility of a normal, including physical, relationship with an ordinary (but devoted) human lover. However, the focus of the book is less on the romance--although that is present--and more on the intellectual, psychological, and theological issues the characters are wrestling with. Like Blackburn's other books that I've read, "Second Son" is scifi/fantasy, but it's very intellectual scifi/fantasy, with lots of consideration given to the technological, moral, and psychological issues that the characters face. Furthermore, although Grey is the main character in this book, Mallory and her friends and colleagues once again feature as educated, professional women who are complex, thoughtful characters rather than cliches. Readers looking for a light piece of fantasy or paranormal romance will probably be overwhelmed, but, as with the first book in the series, readers looking for something that will give them thoughts and ideas to chew over will probably find a lot to enjoy here.
My thanks to the author for providing a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Author Ellison Blackburn’s trademark ability to weave thought-provoking concepts into stories that are gripping, well-developed reads is back on display in this series, as she explores love, fidelity, and faith through the lens of Grey and Mallory’s lives. The handling of the Christian mythology displays the depth of research that went into the story and provides a strong framework that underlies the choices the protagonists must make in this book. This second novel in the series focusses strongly on the interpersonal relationships of the characters, leaving the first book’s tale of the landmark discovery at Gwellen and its scientific exploitation more as a side note to Grey’s personal journey and the questions it raises. This book will definitely enthrall readers who enjoy exploring the boundaries between science, philosophy, and religious belief.
I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.
