Author was very repetitive regarding MC's history, condition throughout entire story -- centuries old, beat-up Assault Marine who carries and talks to all of his dead squad mates in his head. I don't believe there's a single male in his past, whatever, but they help him continually w advice regarding his alien female partner, relationship .
Unfortunately, that alone felt like, to me, a good portion of this story. MC plods along in plot and author introduces a lot of twists and turns that eventually just got boring. Stuff just gets thrown in, magic n telelepathy n ?, with no real value to story, in my opinion. I guess I just didn't get it, what is this story really about -- alien female, human relationship (that gets a little graphic in end and for me, I didn't need it) or was it about when, if ever, MC can pull the trigger of a weapon. Most of story revolves over the above two and MC's history, condition. Revenge Squad mission statement is ok, but that's not the story.
Not authors fault that this isn't what I signed up for in mil SciFi but retag this, put it in right genre. Just because a lot of vets are around after a war, firefight or two w mil spec wpns doesn't make it Military.
