Winston S. Churchill (1874-1965) has been called 'the greatest Briton'. An international statesman, orator, biographer, historian, author and Nobel Prize winner, his works remain in print with the world's leading publishers.

Educated at Harrow and Sandhurst, Winston spent several years in the army before becoming a newspaper correspondent and then an MP. His cabinet positions included First Lord of the Admiralty at the outbreak of the First World War and later Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Churchill became Prime Minister in 1940 and for five years led Britain though its 'finest hour'. Defeated in the July 1945 election, he was Leader of the Opposition until re-elected Prime Minister in 1951. He was knighted in 1953, the same year he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He stepped down as Prime Minister in 1955 and remained an MP until 1964.

Winston Churchill is one of the most influential figures in the history of the modern western world. This set of books called The Second World War reveals the intricate balance of events leading to and developing through the late nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century, culminating in the current world order of the late twentieth century and early twenty-first century. Of course, there is a biased point of view, and Churchill readily acknowledges this fact. However, the history comes alive in real time as the actual correspondence of world leaders at the time is presented categorically and chronologically. Churchill's analysis and commentary are interspersed throughout. There is no other work like it of which I am aware.

The following is taken from the Nobel Prize site. "The Nobel Prize in Literature 1953 was awarded to Winston Churchill "for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values".

What more can be said? This is a must read for all who wish to better understand the world in which we live, and the history behind it. I think also, Churchill stands in juxtaposition to many current world leaders in that he is a rational thinker committed to governance in accordance with the very best traditions of democracy and freedom.

I ordered a complete set of Churchill’s WWll volumes for my husband. The first shipment was somehow lost in the mail and I thought my order would just be cancelled. But, that was not the case. Gray and Nash is operated by professional dealers who aim to please. It took a little time for them to locate another set of these volumes, but the books I received are in excellent condition and every bit as nice as the ones I had initially ordered. My husband and I are thrilled with this purchase and we would be very happy to work with these dealers again in the future.

Being a War II buff the content of the books reveled numerous facts not previously known by me and put new emphasis on many of the little published wars within the wars.....fascinating reading! Mr Churchill is a gifted story teller.
