If you're a reader of thrillers and appreciate stories with every thing that goes with them - intrigue, murder, planned destruction and terrorists -then you can't go wrong with 8 Seconds to Midnight. John Leifer grabs the reader from the first pages and doesn't let go. The author has created an exceptional story filled with everything that makes a thriller a thriller. The cast of characters, the good guys and the bad, is superbly developed and the plot is filled with action and suspense all the way to a satisfying ending. The story moves along at break-neck pace, leaving the reader expectantly waiting to turn to the next page. Very good story, very entertaining. I highly recommend this book.

8 SECONDS TO MIDNIGHT is a solid representative of the terrorist-threat action novel genre. It has a courageous, patriotic American hero at its core, with a tragedy in his backstory to give him human interest. It has a beautiful, intelligent love interest, with the courage and loyalty needed to stand fast and refuse to flee from danger when she can offer help instead. It has fanatic enemies devoted to their cause, some of them simply misguided and others near-sociopathic representations of cold-hearted evil.

It has a dire threat to an American tradition, and a lot of action, danger, and adrenaline-pumping energy directed at solving that threat. And it has the usual morally problematic actions taken by American agents out of seeming dire necessity - but it's all presented as necessary, because the threat is so very terrible. This is a great book if what you want is a vigorous, action-packed thriller with lots of suspense, dramatic last-minute acts of courage, and a clearly-defined right and wrong side, with no serious moral qualms or questions to distract. It's a terrific beach or airplane read....

Verdict8 SECONDS TO MIDNIGHT is a thriller packed with energy, action, and suspense, which consistently delivers on the promises of the genre.
Publisher's Weekly/BookLife Review:
Well-developed main characters and plausible technical details help make a familiar plot fresh in Leifer's thriller. In the near future, the United Islamic State, an ISIS-like group, activates sleeper agents planted 15 years earlier as part of a plot to detonate a nuclear bomb in Times Square on New Year's Eve. UIS leader Ibrahim al-Bakr's influential ally in the Pakistani military, Gen. Ash Patel, the chairman of that country's ordinance factories, has made it possible for UIS to steal enough uranium to make a 15-kiloton bomb, a scheme that U.S. intelligence learns of through a CIA asset romantically involved with Patel's deputy. As the clock ticks down to the fatal hour, America's efforts to prevent the detonation are led by Cmdr. John Hart, a "physician, Navy Seal, and senior intelligence officer" who's the president's go-to person during national crises. Leifer keeps readers guessing as to whether Hart and his team will succeed..." Fans of Tom Clancy and the TV series 24 will be riveted. (BookLife)

Sinfully Wicked Book Reviews -- 9/18:
Terminal, by John Leifer, is a pulse pounding edge of your seat terroristic thriller set against the backdrop of America and the Middle East. Leifer's writing is so rich you will get lost between the pages, hoping for the story to never end. I was completely drawn in from the first page and I can truly say this is an outstanding and thought provoking story. I have a feeling each new book in the series will be all five star reads for me. Yes, it is that good!
Terminal is the first book in the Commander John Hart series and it is actually a prequel to 8 Seconds to Midnight., which I will quickly be adding to my TBR. I am highly looking forward to more books in this series. I am well and truly hooked now.

Rating: 4 stars

In chapter one readers meet Dr. Ayesha Naru, daughter of General Omar Malik, the top-ranking Pakistani military officer. Professionally the doctor uses her late mother’s maiden name at an attempt to keep her work separated from her father’s renown.

Chapter two introduces the setting of the novel to which the American public is unaware.

“A year and change had elapsed since the United Islamic State had launched a biological attack on the four busiest airports in America. … They almost succeeded.”

Readers now meet Commander John Hart, the leading bio warfare expert in the United States, a physician, Navy Seal, and senior intelligence officer. It was he who “led the team responsible for liberating the vaccine from a clandestine laboratory in Pakistan.”

Hart works with, and is engaged to, Dr. Elizabeth Wilkins, the preeminent virologist who runs the Bio level IV lab at the CDC, the US Health protection agency.

Fifty-four action filled chapters keep readers engrossed in the story of bioterrorism, nuclear warfare, deceit, and personal interactions around the globe right up to its satisfying conclusion. It is a timely tale reflecting the shades of involvement, as well as the personal consequences, revolving around these and the other characters introduced.
