Wow! Just finished reading The Secret Affair. It was given to me as a gift. Outstanding. I found it difficult to put this book down. In fact, I didn't. I read it in one sitting. Thought it was a fast moving dramatic mystery story with compelling characters that deceptively results in an epiphanous moment of self-examination and reassessment of values. Looking forward to more in this series.
BUT, this is a turn of hand for Ethan, it is a Romance Short Story, and a one that has an interesting plot and lays the ground work for a series of books about Jennifer Morgan an Advertising Agent.
Jennifer and her partner Amber have a presentation to make to a larger Ad Agency to try and land some freelance work on one of that companies projects. But Jennifer stops at the local gourmet coffee shop across the street from their appointment to get a cup of coffee for her and one for Amber. While she is waiting she witnesses a very abrupt, arrogant and frankly unkind man who charges into the store to get his to go order and then argues that the coffee is not hot enough.
Jennifer can't stand his actions and takes him down a notch. Well, that sets the stage for her meeting across the street. When she arrives she realizes that her encounter at the coffee shop was with one of the Founders of Blackwood Advertising, William. Yup, a classic, I screwed up before I even got to give my presentation.
Not to give away too much of the story Jennifer and Amber find that they land the contract, but they also land the interest of William Blackwood who starts to flirt and ask Jennifer out for dinner. Let the romance begin, right? Wrong, Jennifer has no desire to have dinner with William Blackwood, but she does want the contract. Will she stoop to dating William to get the contract?
Also, William is not who he claims to be. Thus the stage is set for a romance with some definite problems.
For a change of pace Ethan Jones does a great job of pulling off a romance novel that is part comedy of errors, part detective story and part criminal action. It is a great short story and you won't be disappointed.
Don't let Ethan's venture into a new type of story worry you, he does a great job.
