Book 4 opens on a eerie vision and then gives way to Marie and Cory’s wedding day. It seems like business as usual for the intrepid SIPS team. Once again the team is facing a serial killer on their island and it should have been loads of fun. Once again though I am confused as to the role of the SIPS in team in the arc of the story. Much like in book three the main story centers around other characters, not the team or even Marie, who is ostensibly the main character. Rather this story is about a young psychic named Isabelle. Though she fits in quite nicely with the team as she learns to use her talents, I see the great potential for a middle grade or YA series of books spun off with her character and the other girls, maybe a cyber group. Would a cyber seance be effective? The team seems relegated to a support role in this book, not even being involved in the solving of the mystery as this is done by the girls, away from the action. Another concern I have is that the psychic dialogue is becoming cliche. This series started with an average working woman who has a gift that she was exploring and sharing. Paranormal terminology was used only when necessary and explained when needed, that was refreshing. This latest installment reads like an episode of New Jersey Medium or any number of similarly exploitive shows and for me it just changes the whole feel of the story.

It was nice to get Sullivan Island and the surrounding areas a bit more fleshed out and the slice of beach living described in the story makes for a beautiful setting. The invocation of Edgar Allen Poe, the father of the modern suspense thriller, was a nice touch and made me want to re-read The Gold Bug, as I haven’t since my high school detective fiction class. Over-all this was a nice afternoon read.

This is the 4th book in the series. Are you a fan of ghost stories? Psychics? Mysteries? If so, then this series is a must read.
Marie and Cory finally wed in a beautiful ceremony. That night, though, Cory is called out on a homicide. This time, headless corpses are turning up on both Sullivan’s and Folly Islands in SC. While all this is going on, she is still trying to process the death of one of her closest friends and mentor Myra.
Marie then meets a young girl with psychic abilities who aids in the investigation. Deciding to mentor the girl and work with her family so they can all come to terms with her abilities, Marie decides to open up Myra’s home for other young people and their families struggling to come to terms with their abilities. Bringing them and their families in for long weekends of training and support.
This series is just so good, I had to read one after the other. I really hope there is more in the series. I am eagerly waiting.

Secret of Coffin Island
(Marie Bartek and the SIPS Team Book 4)
Robin Murphy

4 Stars

*I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review*

Book four in Robin Murphy's series has turned out to be my favorite one. Well written both in plot and character. I liked the inclusion of historical references a lot. I think it added to the mystical element very well. There were other aspects of this book that gave it a refreshing feel to it. The lead person, Dr. Marie Bartek has become a solid character in my eyes and has evolved beautifully throughout the books.

Ms. Murphy did a great job of intermingling the psychic world with that of the rest of us. Also with the workings of law enforcement. That was a great part for me from the beginning.

The series started out slow for me personally but by the fourth book I am a fan. This one is definitely read worthy.

Secrets of Coffin Island will lead you in to the world of more psychics, ghosts, and more paranormal activity as Marie and SIPS go on another adventure. The gang this time go to find out if Pirates. Yes, Pirates are really hunting the island as bodies start lining the island.
This is another breath taking adventure that will have you up reading till the end. This wasn’t my favorite but it was actually really good. I haven’t read many ghost books before this series but it has definitely been a great experience. Ms. Robin has a great series that will keep you till the end .
I would recommend this series to anyone who has a love for the paranormal because this is a series worth reading
