Old houses, of the very wealthy, commonly had tunnels and out-of-sight passages for the servants to move around the house without being seen. It seems laMalediction has many of these hidden tunnels and hallways, in which an intruder/stalker is hiding.
John had been searching the old mansion for his half-sister who has gone missing, after noting on her calendar that she was coming to laMalediction, when Olivia arrived. Now the two of them are working together to find his sister and her stalker.
This fast-paced, enjoyable story has mystery, romance and voodoo! All the elements needed for a story set in a cursed mansion, in a bayou in Louisiana.
The house is properly eerie too because Olivia realizes early on that someone is using the secret passages to spy on them. Olivia, herself, was another fabulous element of this book. She wasn't someone who screamed and needed to be rescued--no, she was in there investigating, toting a gun and a flashlight. Olivia is the hardcore heroine we all secretly wish we were.
I've just picked up the follow-up book to this one: Bayou Bodyguard http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004Z2I5ME/ref=kinw_myk_ro_title but I've yet to read it. They're back in the haunted house though--so how could the author go wrong. I'm sure I'll be reviewing that one soon too.
Ms. DeLeon is gold. I'm so glad I found another author with backlist that I can happily throw money at and KNOW that I'll feel like it was money worth spending.
Yep, this might just be the best suspense I've read in a good long while.
Guys, creepy house with secret passages...if that doesn't make you smile, you're dead inside and my recommendation was wasted on you anyway.
I always include a favorite excerpt from the book and there were quite a few, but this one made me laugh...it's Olivia and John talking (starts with John):
"I hate to mention this, but I see lightning in the distance. I think we're in for another big storm."
"Great. Another night with no power, trapped in a haunted house with an uninvited guest. If I had blond hair and big boobs, I'd be a living a cliché."
