Editorial Reviews
Review
This massive study is an astonishing document. Blavatsky synthesizes science and spirituality into an exhilarating journey of spiritual awareness. --The Book Reader (1988)
You dismiss H. P. Blavatsky rather too easily as 'hocus pocus.' Nobody ever affected the thought of so many able men and women by 'hocus pocus. The real source of her influence is to be found in The Secret Doctrine, a book on the religions of the world suggesting or disclosing an underlying unity between all great religions. It was a book which Maeterlinck said contained the most grandiose cosmogony in the world, and if you read it merely as a romantic compilation, it is one of the most exciting and stimulating books written for the last hundred years. It is paying a poor compliment to men like Yeats, Maeterlinck, and others, to men like Sir William Crookes, the greatest chemist of modern times, who was a member of her society, to Carter Blake, F.R.S., the anthropologist, and the scholars and scientists in many countries who read H. P. Blavatsky's books, to assume that they were attracted by 'hocus pocus.' If you are ever in the National Library, Kildare Street, and have a couple of hours to spare, you might dip into 'The Proem' to The Secret Doctrine, and you will understand the secret of the influence of that extraordinary woman on her contemporaries. --George W. Russell (AE), Irish poet and essayist

About the Author
Helena Petrovna Blavatsky was born August 12, 1831, at Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine, daughter of Colonel Peter Alexeyevich von Hahn and novelist Helena Andreyevna (née de Fadeyev). In 1849 she married N. V. Blavatsky, and shortly thereafter began more than 20 years of extensive travel, which brought her into contact with mystic traditions the world over. She was the principal founder of The Theosophical Society in New York City in 1875, and devoted her extraordinary literary talents to its humanitarian and educational purposes until her death in London, England, on May 8, 1891.

It is challenging to describe this since the content is beyond most similar work. The refreshing surprise is that the author seems to have an easy time blending ideas that are commonly separated. My respect for this work continues to grow. Reading this has seriously pushed me to become a humble student. That is empowering.

I have not read through the entire book yet but my perspective about whatever I have read so far is that Helena Blavatsky’s figurative language with not much literal explanation, constantly requires the reader to analyze the context further deep and the contexts different facets from different angels, for which I believe the book is a little too lengthy. Figurative language can make the context sound more interesting but works better in the characterization of the short texts and stories. The book can be used as a mind jogger though to give some boost to the brain, to sharpen and enhance brain activity through constant reading and analyzing.

Not a comment on the content, as it is very professionally and well-printed. The book is smaller than I expected (thank goodness!). Was pleasantly surprised when I unboxed it. It's easy to read, flip through and the print quality is wonderful. Text is not too small for me, but it may be an effort to make out the words for those with poorer eyesight.

Essential wisdom and principles from the past to ground and guide in these difficult times. There is no writing on the planet like hers.

Totally not what I thought it was going to be. I read the first few pages and decided to return. I was hoping for more of a science/philosophical storyline, but it’s more centered towards religion.

Glad that I ordered it. This was Einsteins favorite read. It is quite long and a bit tedious but, the knowledge is priceless. Love it! And it came very quickly. I am a happy customer

As described, a must have. Take you time with it and start with the foreword and afterword, both volumes. Then slowly work your way into the bulk. Thank you

Treasure Trove

Difficult read. Tons of food for thought. Readers, don't expect to get through these tomes in a few days. Tackle it bit, by bit, take notes and be prepared to look up and research many topics. Without accepting the challenge that these volumes provide, extracting information will be very difficult.
