Anyway, I just watched it, and wow. Even the good reviews I read didn't do it justice (and I'm sure neither will this one). It was awesome. The cinematography, and the acting, were excellent. It doesn't seem low-budget at all. It's not gaudy, nor over-the-top. The introduction was awesome. The music at the end is nice. There was magic fairly early on in the movie all the way to the end (I got the impression from what I read that there was just a whole bunch of it all at once somewhere near the end, but nope, it's not like that at all; it's more of a low-moderate amount during most of the movie). The magic involves plants growing or in one case, dying (seemingly along with people's moods), and the magic seems to have healing properties. We see spirits of their moms a lot (sometimes that might be dream or imagination, however). It's not really about magic, though.
The garden is more like a sizeable forest/jungle than a regular garden. They never plant any seeds. They just kind of hang out with each other and the dog and swim. The garden grows on its own and is beautiful.
IMO, the characters are all actually likable, and there is character development for most of them.
A lot of the plot involves the theme of overcoming deception and fears/pain about their parents (or wife, for one) and themselves.
There is indeed no foul language, religious or otherwise.
I was glad that it didn't depict a bunch of people who died from disease (like one of the older movies did). You don't have to worry about anything like that. Here's the content that might concern some:
The house burns down (near the end), but no one dies (and they later rebuild). There is a fire rescue scene, however, and I get vibes like one character might die (he didn't).
A dog gets its foot caught it a trap (but it's later magically healed). There's some creepy screaming in a dark mansion-like house at night a few times (but if you know the story, you know why), but the screaming person later (much later) becomes happy and makes friends on the way (despite being reluctant).
The main character is naughty in that she throws a rock at an adult when hidden in a tree (but she's later caught and disciplined--although the movie ends before we find out if the discipline would be carried out).
The main character (who is apparently used to greater wealth) also isn't at first very nice to someone who is working there, and assumes she's her servant, insists she dress her and stuff. This might be seen as racist (and I got those vibes)--but I don't think the movie is condoning that behavior (nevertheless, people sensitive to that will probably be upset by it). However, she decides to dress herself eventually. It would have been nice if we had had more scenes of them being more friendly to each other, though. There was a scene (I already described it), though.
There only violence has already been described, pretty much. There's no fighting or killing shown at the beginning, if anyone led you to believe that, although you see someone who might have been involved in such beforehand.
The main character is definitely strong, even when she's spoiled. She becomes somewhat less spoiled as the movie progresses.
The main character steals a necklace, although she didn't intentionally take it (she just didn't put it back in time; had she done so, she may have been caught for sneaking around; however, she didn't put it back the next time she returned). She is caught, however (at the same time as the rock incident). And yeah, she does sneak around the house a lot, and tell one to a few lies.
The main character throws her doll in the ocean and says she's not a kid (after a boy says he's not a kid when she offers to tell him a story). She used to tell stories to her doll a lot.
Anyway, all that probably makes the movie sound a lot worse than it is. It's a great movie.
Here are some other points to consider:
There's no gardener in this movie. The dog goes into the garden, somehow, and the girl climbs the wall (remarkably well) to get inside (she has a frightening fall when she does, though, but she's seemingly unhurt). She finds a key inside after the fact (a robin shows the key's location to her). The robin(s) seem kind of magical.
The boy doesn't first start walking in the garden. He starts in his room, and then again at the end of the movie.
The settings that they found to use for this movie are very beautiful. Wether it is the wallpaper or a rocking horse details in a room of the manor or a part of a garden it’s exactly what you want to see from the secret garden.
I really love another rendition of the secret garden as well and I think the music in this one isn’t as good as the last. I also don’t like that the era is different from the book. I’m not a fan of the whole WWll time period. But the outfits are nice!
Definitely worth watching. I do miss the old Martha too. This one seems aloof and uncaring.
