All but one of the main characters are British, that one being an exotic, tiny, young and beautiful Chinese girl name Liu, who causes some tense moments between Fran and her lover-beau.

Great character development and descriptions - you could easily identify with the people, places, and fabulous meals! Ms. Warburton did a wonderful job of creating an emotional plotline and weaving the personalities and events into a believable story. Well written and edited, she has a talent for plotting a tale and tying it all together into a satisfying ending.
With beautiful clever characters a delight so form them in your own mind and bring them to life.
As one wondered about the murder at the beginning Jan will leave us on tenderhooks
till almost the last page - very clever.
Overall, The Secret is a great read, and I'm very much looking forward to the author's next book.
I admit to getting a bit miffed with Fran for sleeping with Bob- when she was in love with James! I wasn't sure about the chinese girl, the car accident was just a little too much of a coincidence to swallow. A beefy three and a half to four star rating for me. That said, the author is skilled at creating a complicated emotional plot whilst keeping the narrative readable and I look forward to more. A very good debut novel and hugely enjoyable.
