Using a sample collected from Ashley Madison, this book is the result of a yearlong inquiry into women’s extramarital experiences. Ultimately, these women reject the binary proposition of marriage that assumes that either we work on our marriages and remain monogamous within them, or we break up the relationship and take up other relationships. These women conceive of an alternate solution to a marriage that is not wholly working, where their own needs are ignored, unmet, and not prioritized. Thus, the women in this study are engaging in secret defiance of the expectations of marriage and primary partnerships. This book gives voice to women’s experiences and perceptions regarding their participation in infidelity, and glimpses into the interworkings of our most intimate relationships, and the ways women negotiate marriages that fall short of their expectations.

This fascinating and well written book develops a sociology of infidelity, bringing insight into marriage, monogamy, relationships, and internet dating that will be useful for researchers examining relationships, professors teaching classes about the family, sexuality, and gender, and counselors of patients who are involved with infidelity. I was intrigued by the details of how women who cheat think about their actions, form and negotiate the details of their affairs, and the benefits and drawbacks they get from those affairs. The distinct social norms around affairs reveal what we often take for granted in other relationships. Many of my assumptions about affairs were overturned, and it was a fun read too! This book provides an in-depth look into the lives of women who cheat. The subject is fascinating and the book is written in a way that allows for personal accounts of the women who have cheated to be used throughout. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. The participants in this study are women that we meet everyday. They are our family, friends, and our coworkers. The writings of Dr. Alicia Walker provide an insight that the public does not often get to see. 10/10

Dr. Walker is amazing. Most women I have shared this book with have been deeply touched by the stories and the honesty about modern marriage. Compelling research by a groundbreaking sociologist that both men and women alike could be changed from reading.

The reason that women cheat is not what you expect. Women in the generation have very different views about marriage. But they are realistic views, more honest views of the relationship of marriage.

Alicia, actually publishing creepy fetish lit is already bad enough. Trying to promote it with fake profiles is next level.

I would highly recommend this book to everyone. The women in this study show an interesting view on modern marriages that are not seen very often. This book would be an amazing read to men and women alike. This book has been a great addition to academia!

Trying the pass as serious academic work, it is not much more than soft core porn for women. The author has academic credentials that make it seem she shopped around for the easiest college majors (english, education and sociology) at mediocre institutions never staying in one field for very long. Her weak theories and laughable insights are worthy of a naive sophomore. She comes to obvious conclusions. The depth I wouldnexpect from a high school student. It is not a textbook (except for the author’s courses) and is poorly edited.

The academic research that went into “Why Women Cheat” is a refreshing new perspective on how women look at marriage today. Reading the personal accounts reflects what many women are challenged with as their roles has evolved. Trying to juggle it all and be satisfied in their role in personal and professional lives is something we hear about but getting it from actually accounts puts it in a much more personal perspective. Can’t wait to read more from the author.
