The book is setup somewhat similar to a text book or encyclopedia. Each page has a different animal or creature featured but instead of boring you with tons of added text, each animal is wrapped up in an easy to understand, interesting bundle. Each has a brief description, something totally kid friendly that introduces you to the animal, then below that intro, facts are listed about the animal. This allows the child to really get to know all the important and cool things about each creature in a very succinct and fun way that makes them want to keep reading. As far as appearances go, the book is also a 10! It has colorful blocks of text on pages and cute and colorful pictures of all the animals, as well. The eye-catching pages definitely make it appealing for younger audiences!
When I first introduced the book to my son (he is 7 years old) he absolutely loved it. He was so thrilled and excited. A nature and animal lover at heart, he started reading immediately. This book is perfect for him because it satisfies his curiousity about so many different animals, bugs, creatures, and insects. I found him commenting about certain things he read and even telling me all about hummingbirds actually have tongues and how marlins can weigh up to 2000 pounds!
Totally awesome book and a must buy if you have a child 7+.
PS: Did you now that slugs can lay 400 to 500 eggs in a single year!!! (P. 37, The Secret Loves of Animals). Crazy right??? Check out this book to learn more interesting and crazy animal facts!!!
This is brief enough for an eight year old yet enjoyable and interesting enough for any adult!
The Secret Lives of Animals is a fun reference guide with lots of great facts and nice illustrations. I loved that it concentrated on North American animals. It encourages kids to head outside and look around nature to see what they can spot.
Each animal, bird, sea creature and insect is presented with an illustration and interesting facts in an easy to read and understand format. Some feature "Science Q and A" and others have a "Go Outside" box that explains how to find the creature in the wild. I thoroughly enjoyed the "little-known facts" presented on each animal, and I'm sure children will enjoy this feature as well.
The sections are well-organized, featuring invertebrates up to large mammals. There is also an index in the back to make finding a particular animal a snap. I liked the section in the back, "Animals by State and Province", with a quick breakdown of where to find each animal.
Any book that encourages children to head outside for some fresh air is aces in my book. This is a great book for fun and for school projects.
