In Other Worlds: SF and the Human Imagination, a collection of non-fiction essays appeared in 2011. Her non-fiction book, Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth was adapted for the screen in 2012. I really love this collection of essays and comics by some of today's top female creators. I am rather new to the world of comics, and this gives me a good idea about which creators to look out for. New to this expanded edition (the first compilation was a Kickstarter project; this one is published by Dark Horse) is Monstress writer Marjorie Liu's essay "Ghosts," which is one of the more solemn pieces in this book. Her memories of finding solace in the world of books resonated with me - with most geek girls, I think - and a hint about abuse in her past was pretty shocking and heart-wrenching.

Has a number of pieces written from different viewpoints, and with different graphical and storytelling styles. This is one of those books you can read back to back in an evening, or digest chapter by chapter over time.

I loved this book! I recommend this collection to geek girls and guys everywhere! I related so much to the stories about late bloomers, online romance, and being in love with fictional characters! If you are part of any fandom, if you enjoy conventions, if you are in to sci-fi and fantasy on a personal level, then this book is for you!

Fun! Definitely a great gift to that geek girl in your life :P I'm gifting it to one of my nieces as an engagement gift after receiving it myself from my mom. I absolutely loved it and it's best described as a "slumber party in book format."

Don’t let the graphic novel trick you, this is not for tweens. I’m sure the writing and stories are great, I’ve only read a few so far, but it is for mature readers.

Since this is an anthology, I'm not going the regular route of rating/reviewing each story or only my favorites. What I will tell you is that this is a mixed bag of delightful treats and packs of wisdom. Whether it's by essay, comic strip, short graphic novel, or abstract, "The Secret Loves of Geek Girls" carries as much of geek culture by speaking on the love lives and sexual exploits of women (cisgender or trans) through the lenses of video game culture, comic culture, literary prose, genre prose, and even by ancient 1990s net forums or love by email or text message. It's a mixed bag of industry giants telling their innermost secrets. Now, speaking on this, my favorite stories may not be yours, which is why I want you to purchase this title to see for yourself. From harrowing tales of school bullying, haphazard college romance, first loves, speed dating, marriage, divorce, intimacy, sexual discovery, and the heartbreak that comes when we fall in, or grow to, or fall out of, love as only Geek females and femmes can experience, there were many stories that spoke to me. Perhaps with such a variety of personal musings, some may speak directly to your heart and mind.

This book I initially bought on a whim having read other works by Margaret Atwood. It was a pleasant surprise. The stories, which are written by a number of different authors, are diverse not only in topic but also in characters, including LGBT. If you're a geek girl or know someone who is, this is definitely a good choice.

Reviewed in Germany on October 21, 2016Verified Purchase
