This is a classic reference on the Chinese secret societies in 19th and 20th Centuries. It well documented the development and spread related to different movements. Secret societies had their own code of ethics, with the similar agenda as Freemason of the West. This book disclosed a lot of secret on these kind of societies. Almost all modern revolutionaries were secret societies connected, including Dr Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of the modern republic in 1911, do did Chiang Kai-shek, of KMT and Chu Tek, a communist military leader. Of interest are the pictures, photos and the triad seal. This book also covers the secret dialog between strangers in order to find out if both men were from the same society.
One interesting footnote on p.77 said: in 1867, Viceroy Tso Tsung-T'ang was sent by the imperial government to put down the Moslem rebels in Chinese Turkestan. Moslem rebels still are problem even to this day!
